By Adam Zagoria on March 11, 2012, 6:27PM

Zena Edosomwan, a 6-foot-8 forward from Harvard-Westlake in Calif., has verbally pledged to Harvard and will enroll there in 2013 following a year at Northfield Mount Hermon.

“I picked Harvard because it is a great school and my relationship with Coach [Tommy] Amaker and Coach Yanni [Hufnagel],” he said by text.

Edosomwan picked Harvard over offers from UCLA, Texas, USC, Cal and Washington.

“I will bring toughness, defense, versatility and a winning attitude,” he said. (more…)

Cali Big Man Still Leaning to Harvard

By Adam Zagoria on March 02, 2012, 9:32AM

Cali big man Zena Edosomwan is still dreaming of playing at Harvard.

And he’s wanted that even before Linsanity began.

“That’s where he wants to go,” Greg Hilliard, the Harvard-Westlake coach, told SNY.tv Thursday by phone.

“He still doesn’t have the index he’s after. The last test he took in January is due back any day now. He still would have the opportunity to take it another time if he’s short.” (more…)

Cali Big Man Dreaming of Harvard

By Adam Zagoria on December 13, 2011, 4:48PM

Zena Edosomwan attends the Harvard-Westlake School in California, but he’s dreaming of playing for Harvard.

A 6-foot-8 power forward ranked No. 35 at his position in the Class of 2012 by Rivals, Edosomwan currently lists the Crimson ahead of traditional powerhouses UCLA and Texas, as well as Cal and USC.

“His top preference has been leaning toward Harvard,” Greg Hilliard, the Harvard-Westlake coach, told SNY.tv Tuesday by phone.

“With his clear leaning toward Harvard, he needs 70 more points on the math side of things [on the SAT]. If the gets that most likely he would go. (more…)

Harvard Cracks Top 25 for First Time

By Adam Zagoria on December 06, 2011, 8:01AM

At this very moment, there are more Ivy League schools (1) in the Top 25 than there are schools from the Pac-12 (0).

And for the first time ever, that Ivy League school is Harvard.

Tommy Amaker’s Crimson are No. 25 in the country in the AP rankings and No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll.

The Crimson becomes the first Ivy League team to be ranked nationally in a major poll since Cornell was ranked No. 22 in the ESPN/USA Today poll during the 2010 season. The last Ivy team to appear in the AP was the 1997-98 Princeton team that finished No. 8 in the rankings. (more…)

McGary Has UConn Options; Cummins to Harvard

By Adam Zagoria on May 31, 2011, 8:31PM

The defending national champs have a scholarship to give.

Some player currently on a high school or prep campus could be a member of the defending champion UConn Huskies in a matter of days or weeks.

“We’re operating right now on 10 scholarships,” UConn coach Jim Calhoun said recently in New York. “We can add one more and we plan to.”

Toward that end, UConn offered 6-foot-10, 255-pound Brewster big man Mitch McGary — currently a member of the Class of 2012 — and gave him the option of enrolling in 2011 or 2012. (more…)

Harvard-Bound Hooper Lights it Up at iS8

By Adam Zagoria on May 24, 2011, 12:12PM

By ALAN AVITAL

NEW YORK — Cheers and jeers reverberated throughout the iS8 gymnasium Sunday afternoon, but in the midst of all the hoopla during the finals of the iS8/Nike Spring Classic, some Sean Bell fans were clearly yelling, “Get The Shooter.”

That reference clearly put Harvard recruit Max Hooper square in the spotlight.

Hooper, a 6-foot-7 shooting guard from San Jose, Calif., via Brewster (N.H.) Academy, clearly knew his experience playing at iS8 would be beneficial as he ventures onto Cambridge this fall.

“I can’t say enough of how great the experience was to play at iS8,” said Hooper, who is doing his postgraduate work at Brewster after transferring from Mater Dei High School in California. “Being able to compete with some of the high Division 1 prospects was great. It’s the highest level possible.” (more…)

6-11 Malcolm Gilbert A Defensive Force

By Adam Zagoria on June 14, 2010, 11:20PM

NEW YORK — Malcolm Gilbert didn’t score a single point during Sunday’s 17-and-under Gold championship game at the Rumble in the Bronx at Fordham University.

But at 6 feet, 11 inches tall, Gilbert was a major factor in helping East Coast Elite down Andre Drummond and the Connecticut Basketball Club, 63-58, for the title.

Gilbert had five blocks on Drummond, the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2012, in the first half and six total blocks in the game. He also finished with 9 rebounds — 6 offensive, 3 defensive — before fouling out with 54 seconds remaining.

“He’s intriguing because of his upside,” East Coach Elite coach Terrell Myers said before the final. “What people don’t understand is, they see 6-11, they look at him as an offensive player. He’s not an offensive player, he’s a defensive player. (more…)

‘Nova’s Wright Wants to Play 4 Out, 1 In; Hurley Talks Sidiki Johnson; St. Ben’s Notes

By Adam Zagoria on September 25, 2009, 5:13PM

NEWARK – Villanova coach Jay Wright has so many talented guards this season that he wants to play four out and one in once the season begins.

“When Reggie Redding comes back [from suspension], that gives us an option of really having four experienced guards on the floor,” Wright said at the Garden State Coaches Clinic at St. Benedict’s Prep, where he was joined as a speaker for some 500 coaches by Hubie Brown, Jeff Van Gundy, Arizona coach Sean Miller, Pitt coach Jamie Dixon and Temple coach Fran Dunphy.

Wright would like to put Redding, senior guard Scottie Reynolds and sophomores Corey Fisher and Corey Stokes, who starred at St. Ben’s, out on the court with a big man. (more…)

College Coaches Chasing NY Area Recruits

By Adam Zagoria on September 23, 2009, 6:06PM

From John Calipari to Mike Krzyzewski to Jim Calhoun, the biggest names in college coaching have been beating a path to the doors of some of the top high school basketball players in the New York metropolitan area.

The NCAA contact period runs from Sept. 9 until Oct. 5, so college coaches use this time to watch prospects during open gyms and to make their recruiting pitches to kids and their parents during home visits.

This is the critical period when relationships can be made or broken and future NCAA championships can be determined.
