  • Uncommitted point guard Trevon Duval sat with Duke signees Gary Trent Jr., and Wendell Carter Jr. for No. 18 Duke’s 86-78 win over No. 8 North Carolina on Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The 6-foot-3 Duval is on his second official visit, following one to Kansas last week. He still plans to visit Arizona, Baylor and Seton Hall and has set no timetable on a decision.

Trent Jr. said he is recruiting Duval as well as uncommitted wing Kevin Knox and uncommitted big man Mohamed Bamba to Duke. Knox took his official visit to Duke in the fall, and will take his final official to UNC on Feb. 18 for the Virginia game. Bamba is slated to visit Duke Feb. 26-28 for his final official.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — There is no such thing as a moral victory, but George Washington’s interim head coach Maurice Joseph seemed pleased with his team after a crushing 54-53 loss to VCU at home on Wednesday night.

“I’m really proud of how they followed the game plan and executed it well,” he said. “Couldn’t have asked for more.”

The solidly favored Rams made the two-hour drive up from Richmond to GW’s Charles E. Smith Center to meet their A-10 rivals. For the second game in a row, they miraculously emerged victorious after watching their opponent hit a go-ahead three and leave 0.4 seconds on the clock.

NEWARK — With nine seconds left on the clock in Seton Hall’s second straight overtime appearance, freshman guard Myles Powell elevated in the lane and let the ball fly from his right hand.

“Please drop,” Powell said of the thoughts going through his mind as he attempted the eventual game-winning shot.

The sharpshooting rookie got his wish – as the ball clanked off the back of the rim and fell through the net – leading the Pirates to a 72-70 victory over Providence at Prudential Center.

Coming off a victory Saturday at Georgetown, the Pirates found themselves in their second straight overtime contest — their first such stretch since Dec. 9 and Dec. 22 of 2007, against Penn State and James Madison, respectively.
