Donovan Williams is headed to Oklahoma State.

“They’ve got the No. 1 player in the country, [Cade Cunningham],” Williams told ZAGSBLOG Monday. “That’s tough to pass up.”

Williams noted head coach Mike Boynton as a main factor in his decision.

“Their coach has been down here multiple times recruiting me, watching practices,” Williams said. “He’s a player’s coach. He’s one of the only black coaches in the Big 12. I like him, not only because he’s black but because I know he can work with players like me and develop.

“He’s young and was playing not too long ago,” he said. “So he knows what he’s talking about.”

Williams, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound shooting guard from North Star (NE), is ranked as the No. 28 shooting guard and No. 147 overall player in the Class of 2021.

Williams chose Oklahoma State over Kansas State. He took his unofficial to Oklahoma State in January.

“I feel good about the fit,” Williams said. “They need someone who can come in and shoot. I think I can fill that spot really well.”

Williams joins Cade Cunningham, Rondel Walker, Montreal Pena, Matthew Alexander-Moncrieffe and transfer Ferron Flavors as the sixth commit in the Cowboys’ 2020 class.

With J.T. Thor choosing Auburn over Oklahoma State on Sunday, the Cowboys were left with one available scholarship for next season.

Williams is known for physical attributes and for his ability to score the ball. This season while recovering from a torn ACL suffered last summer, Williams averaged 28.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists for North Star.
