GLENDALE, Ariz. — With his third NCAA championship title, North Carolina coach
Roy Williams has entered a select club.
He became just the sixth men’s basketball coach ever to win his third NCAA title by virtue of the Tar Heels’ 71-65 victory over Gonzaga here Monday night. The Heels gained redemption for last year’s last-second loss to Villanova on the
Kris Jenkins three-pointer.
Williams also won titles in 2005 and ’09 at Carolina.
Williams passed his mentor, former UNC coach
Dean Smith, who won two titles at Carolina, but he didn’t want to think about that.
“I don’t think I should be mentioned in the same sentence with him,” he said.
Williams has also won his last two titles, and reached three title games,
without a single one-and-done player.
