WEST ORANGE, N.J. — With a loaded field of St. Anthony, Teaneck, St. Joe’s Metuchen, Trenton Catholic, St. Benedict’s, Roselle Catholic, Hudson Catholic, Rutgers Prep, Paramus Catholic & Hun, Sunday’s action at the Hoop Group Tip-Off Showcase was elite.

With five intense games at West Orange High School, the story of the day was Rutgers Prep’s 44-43 upset of Hudson Catholic. After being outscored 26-9 at halftime, the Argonauts battled back to head into the 4th quarter down 33-26. As the Hawks struggled with shooting all game, and 2013 point guard Kavon Stewart got in foul trouble, Rutgers Prep hit clutch shots to gain a last minute lead and hold on. With primarily Division 2- and 3- bound prospects, the Prep B school pulled the inevitable by defeating a school that starts four future D-1 standouts in Stewart, Mike Young, Reggie Cameron and Iona bound Grant Ellis. 2012 point guard Mike Klinger led the way for Rutgers Prep with 15 points to go along with 12 from senior, Greg Grippo.

Syracuse shed a week’s worth of heavy off-the-court distractions to win its first road game of the season and remain unbeaten.

Does anyone out there think the No. 1 Orange can’t contend for a national championship?

With their 88-72 victory at N.C. State, the ‘Cuse improved to 11-0. Dion Waiters continues to excel off the bench, scoring a team-high 22, Kris Joseph had 21 and Scoop Jardine 16.

Jardine and Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony have both emphasized the team’s ability to ignore the Bernie Fine situation and march forward on the court.

    NEW YORK
    — You might not think that the St. John’s basketball team has much in common with the Ohio State football team.

But right now, Steve Lavin is taking a page from Urban Meyer’s playbook.

    And I’ll tell you how.

Ohio State received a waiver from the NCAA that allows it to have two football coaching staffs at the same time: one under Luke Fickell to coach the Buckeyes in their Jan. 2 Gator Bowl game against Florida and another led by incoming coach Meyer that only handles recruiting.

NEW YORK — Myles Mack didn’t come off the bench at all last year when he led St. Anthony to an undefeated season and a mythical national championship under Naismith Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley.

And he started the first 10 games of his freshman season at Rutgers.

But the 5-foot-9 point guard came off the bench Saturday against Stony Brook, scoring a game- and season-high 22 points in Rutgers’ 67-58 victory at Madison Square Garden.

And now he may be placed in that role for the foreseeable future.
