Fresh off of calling Roger Federer’s historic victory over Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final on Sunday, John McEnroe was back at his second home of Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.
The 7-time Grand Slam champion entered the St. John’s huddle before the second half of their 86-72 win over Marquette.
“I’ve been really close friends with John for a long, long time,” Red Storm coach Chris Mullin said. “He likes to come out and support. As a kid he watched St. John’s. … I met John when I was in high school and we stayed friends ever since. We support each other. John is the ultimate competitor, ultimate New Yorker. It’s nice to have that support.”
McEnroe is also a lifelong Knicks and Rangers fan and frequently supports those teams as well.
Maybe St. John’s can give Johnny Mac an assist for improving to 11-13, 5-6 in the Big East. Bashir Ahmed went for 23 points, Shamorie Ponds had 18, Marcus LoVett 17 and Kassoum Yakwe 14.
