St. John’s on Monday announced the signing of Fordham transfer Joel Soriano, who verbally committed last Thursday.

“I want to take this time to thank Fordham and the Fordham Ramily for taking me in and making me into the man and player I am today,” he said via Twitter. “I am looking forward to joining St. John’s University – Go Red Storm!”

Soriano, a 6-foot-11, 250-pound center out of Yonkers, N.Y., averaged 10.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor during the 2020-21 season.

He chose St. John’s over Oklahoma State, Western Kentucky and Pittsburgh.

“Joel is a local talent that we are thrilled to keep home and welcome into our St. John’s family,” said head coach Mike Anderson. “He’s a tremendous young man who will be a great addition to our roster because of his size, skill set and experience at the collegiate level. Joel gives our team a new dimension on the interior with his scoring, rebounding and defensive abilities. Our staff really looks forward to working with him.”

St. John’s has seen a number of players enter the transfer portal this offseason in Isaih Moore, Vince Cole, Josh Roberts, John McGriff, Marcellus Earlington, Greg Williams Jr. and Rasheem Dunn.

The Johnnies has been active in the portal as well, adding Soriano, Vermont’s Stef Smith and Purdue’s Aaron Wheeler.
