Nate Tabor, the 6-foot-5 small forward from Waterbury (CT) Sacred Heart and the NY Rens AAU program, committed to St. John’s on Wednesday, he tells 247Sports. He took his official visit to St. John’s on December 8.

“I picked them because it’s close to home and everything is there for me, my family, my friends so they can come out every night and support me,” Tabor said. “I just felt comfortable with it and I felt like I was home.”

Tabor has lived with the father of St. John’s junior guard Mustapha Heron since he was in the seventh grade. He chose St. John’s over West Virginia, Seton Hall, LSU, Penn State and UConn.

“The coaching staff,” he said when asked about what sticks out about the program. “They made me feel welcome with open arms. The way it’s set up, for one it’s in Queens. I grew up in Queens. Plus my life is around there and St. John’s and that’s why I picked them.”

According to 247Sports, Tabor is ranked as the No. 63 overall player in the Class of 2020 and the No. 2 player from the state of Connecticut. He is the first commit in the Red Storm’s 2020 class.

“He brings versatility, toughness and a high basketball IQ,” NY Rens director Andy Borman told ZAGSBLOG. “He can do what it takes to win games. He truly cares about winning.”

St. John’s has two players committed in 2019 in N.C. State transfer Ian Steere , who is already on campus, and junior college big man Valdir Manuel.
