The University of Oklahoma solved the problem of having Je’lon Hornbeak transferring by picking up a verbal commitment Friday afternoon from Westchester Community College point guard Gio McLean.

McLean chose the Sooners over St. John’s, Fordham and Duquesne among others. He said Oklahoma entered the picture three or four weeks ago, while Hornbeak’s transfer was announced on April 15.

“I wanted to go somewhere where I could play right away, that was definitely a big factor,” McLean told SNY.tv by phone on Friday afternoon. “They’re giving me the opportunity to come in and work and we’ll see how it goes.”

The 6-foot-1 Bronx Regional graduate became a hot commodity this winter after averaging 16.8 points, 7.4 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game for the 28-5 Vikings, who advanced to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. They fell to Wallace State Community College in the first round.

In the Region XV title game, which sent WCC to the National Tournament, McLean had 13 points and 12 assists against zero turnovers in a 77-73 win over Harcum College.

“I think I’ve always been capable of putting up numbers, I just never had the opportunity until this season,” McLean said. “In a way, I think this was a breakout season for me.”

McLean is the fifth member and the only point guard in the Sooners’ 2014 recruiting class.
