    ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Just hours after the Dominican Republic lost to Team USA Thursday night in Las Vegas, Kentucky coach John Calipari is back on the recruiting trail.

    Calipari — and just about every other high-major coach in the nation as well as 15 NBA scouts — are here at the Nike Global Challenge, a three-day event that features many of the best young players from the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Puerto Rico, China and Lithuania.

    “Yeah, I kind of was [surprised to see him] so I appreciate for the love,” 2013 shooting guard James Young said after scoring a team-best 19 points on 7-for-19 shooting as USA Midwest beat USA West, 87-77, at Episcopal High School.

    The Knicks have owned the metropolitan area since their inception as an original NBA franchise almost 70 years ago. However, as the Nets prepare to move into the brand new Barclays Center in Brooklyn this season, they have designs on making an immediate splash and taking a piece of New York City for themselves.

    If that plan is to come to fruition, it’s going to take a roster that can at the very least be competitive. General Manager Billy King believes he has put together just such a team and on Thursday afternoon, two key pieces of the future in Brooklyn were introduced.

    Seton Hall

    PHILADELPHIA — Bobby Gonzalez appears to have finally gotten his big NBA break.

    The former Seton Hall and Manhattan coach is currently helping out Knicks head coach Mike Woodson with the team in Las Vegas, although he is not employed by the team.

    “Coach Woodson invited me to be with his staff and the New York Knicks team for NBA Summer League in Las Vegas,” Gonzalez, who often frequents Knicks practices in Westchester, told SNY.tv from Las Vegas. “I’m in all the meetings, practices, etc., basically to learn the NBA game and contribute in any way I can.

    PHILADELPHIA — At 6 feet, 10 1/2 inches and 265 pounds, Adonis Delarosa is one of the largest young men here at the Reebok Breakout Challenge.

    Delarosa, 16, is drawing interest from some high-major coaches in part because of the player he is now, but mostly because of the player he could be down the road.

    “I like his skill set but his body needs a little work,” one high-level assistant coach said after watching Delarosa Thursday.

    PHILADELPHIA — After missing the first two games of the Reebok Breakout Challenge to be in summer school, Aquille Carr made his grand entrance Thursday afternoon.

    And even John Wall had to check out “The Crime Stopper.”

    Wall watched the 5-foot-6 Seton Hall commit put up a team-best 18 points Thursday evening as the Friars won in a 73-45 rout of the Wildcats.

    That followed a 14-point outing in his team’s loss earlier Thursday.

    PHILADELPHIA — Two guards getting a lot of interest here at the Reebok Breakout Challenge are  RaShawn “Pookie” Powell and Rashad Vaughn.

    Their paths crossed Thursday morning when Vaughn, an athletic 6-foot-4 2014 wing from Robbinsdale (Minn.) Cooper, scored 15 points to lead the Wildcats over Powell and the Answers, 60-57.

    Powell (pictured) had 9 points and 1 assist in the loss.

    The 6-1 Powell is a 2013 point guard out of Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips. He said he’s considering Memphis, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State, Missouri, UCF and Seton Hall, among others.
