Michigan freshman guard Brandon McCoy Jr. will miss the entire 2026-27 season with a torn ACL, per release.

A former five-star recruit, McCoy was entering his freshman season with the Wolverines and suffered the injury in the team’s final game of its European tour against KK Mega SUPERBET in Montenegro.

Prior to the team’s trip to Montenegro, McCoy averaged 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game in two appearances in Lithuania.

Also being named a McDonald’s All-American in 2026, McCoy announced his commitment to Michigan and then-head coach Dusty May, who’s since left the program for the Dallas Mavericks, at halftime of the team’s Final Four win over Arizona.

The loss of McCoy is a devastating one, as the former top-20 recruit was expected play a crucial role in new head coach Mike Boynton’s starting lineup this season.

With McCoy sidelined for the upcoming season, the Wolverines will now have to put their roster depth to the test, as they’ll be without their presumed starting shooting guard this season.

Slated to also start Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney, who both led the Wolverines to the national championship last season, Boynton and staff may now need to rely heavily on Ricky Liburd, who redshirt last season, and Columbia transfer Kenny Noland to hold down the depth in their backcourt.

Now with a torn ACL, McCoy does have the option to redshirt the season and preserve a year of eligibility, but he’s also been mocked in the lottery in some mock drafts for the 2027 NBA Draft, so it’s unclear if those will fluctuate based on the severity of his injury.
