Andre Curbelo has found a new home.
The native of Puerto Rico who is known for being a magician with the basketball has committed to Southern Miss after spending last season at St. John’s and his first two years at Illinois.
Because the former Long Island Lutheran star did not graduate from St. John’s, he will need a waiver from the NCAA to play at his new school.
He averaged 9.6 points and 4.3 assists last season while battling injuries and clashing with former St. John’s coach Mike Anderson.
In January, he was suspended one game for not adhering to team standards. He then missed the Big East Tournament with a concussion.
Now he will try to reboot his career under coach Jay Ladner and assistant Juan Cardona, whose coaching career began in 1998 when he was named head coach at Lino Padron Rivera High School in his hometown of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Curbelo’s former St. John’s teammate David Jones also committed to Memphis on Monday.
