St. John’s commit Dordije Jovanovic will miss the upcoming season due to ongoing visa issues and will remain in his native Montenegro.
Jovanovic committed to Rick Pitino and the Johnnies in April after playing two seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers G-League team.
Jovanovic’s visa issues were reported to ZAGSBLOG earlier on Wednesday, before it was confirmed that the Montenegrin will be unable to play for the Johnnies this season.
Jovanovic was one of the many international recruits targeted by Pitino and the St. John’s staff, but due to his visa issues, the Johnnies will lose a key depth piece.
He is actually the second foreign player who won’t join the team after Spanish wing Gildas Gimenez ruled academically ineligible
With the loss of Jovanovic, St. John’s is now set to bring in nine new players this season and has one roster spot open
The Johnnies’ list of additions includes four-star center Theo Edema, British guard Quinn Ellis, Serbian forward Lazar Stojkovic, Senegalese forward Babacar Sane, Indiana transfer Reed Bailey, Baylor transfer Tounde Yessoufou, Mercer transfer Kyle Cuffe Jr., Columbia transfer Avery Brown and Syracuse transfer Donnie Freeman (who’s out for the season with an achilles injury).
