Trey Patterson, the former Villanova and Rice wing, is transferring back home to New Jersey to play at Saint Peter’s, he announced this week.
The 6-foot-9 Patterson, who turned 24 on Thursday, would be playing a sixth year of college basketball after initially joining Villanova for the 2020-21 season.
Coming out of Rutgers Prep, Patterson was ranked the No. 8 small forward in the Class of 2021 by the 247Sports Composite, and chose Villanova over Florida and Indiana.
He spent three years at Villanova, but only played 2 games his freshman season
He sat out the 2023-24 season with a shoulder injury and then transferred to Rice where he completed his MBA. He dealt with an ACL and meniscus tear in 2025, and has played just 23 total games the last two seasons.
“They wrote me off, so I flipped the pages,” Patterson wrote on Instagram.
He added by text: “I’m excited about this upcoming journey because I get the chance to come home, be surrounded by my support system, and have the opportunity to help a team win meaningful games while being a leader. I hope to prove that no matter how much adversity comes your way, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel as long as you keep persevering and never give up because it’s just shaping you to become a better version of yourself, on and off the court.”

Said Saint Peter’s coach Bashir Mason: “Anytime you can add a player of Trey’s caliber to your roster it’s a positive. He brings a ton of experience, versatility and most importantly, toughness. I’m excited about helping him flip the pages on all those who wrote him off!”
