  • Ivan RabbCalifornia already landed swingman Davon Dillard and now the Bears are hoping to secure several other high-profile recruits who tripped to campus this weekend.

The 6-foot-11 Ivan Rabb out of Oakland (CA) Bishop O’Dowd and the 6-8 Caleb Swanigan of Fort Wayne (IN) Homestead both enjoyed their visits to campus and the two McDonald’s All-Americans have discussed playing together at the next level.

“I think the visit went real well,” Tami Rabb, Ivan’s mother, told SNY.tv on Monday. “They visit really highlighted the growth and revamping of the Cal basketball program. The new coaching staff and support team are diligently working towards becoming a powerhouse in college ball. It was refreshing to see them outline the changes they are planning to make within their program. There is definitely a new energy within the program.”

aj-englishIona stars David Laury and A.J. English were unanimous selections to the All-MAAC First Team named on Monday, while freshman sharpshooter Schadrac Casimir made the All-Rookie Team.

Laury and English were joined by Manhattan’s Emmy Andujar, Quinnipiac’s Zaid Hearst, Rider’s Matt Lopez and Monmouth’s Justin Robinson, according to MAAC guru Josh Newman of the Asbury Park Press.

Laury and English are the stars of an Iona team that is 24-7 and 17-3 in the MAAC and is locked in as the No. 1 seed in the upcoming league tournament.

“We’re extremely proud of A.J., Dave and Sed for being recognized for their hard work so far this season,” Iona coach Tim Cluess said. “We’re looking forward to a hard fought conference tournament this weekend in Albany and hopefully they continue their success.”

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has the Gaels as a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament, assuming they handle their business in Albany.

Even if they don’t, Siena’s Jimmy Patsos believes they belong in the Dance.

“I believe that Iona deserves an at large bid if they don’t win the MAAC Championship,” Patsos said on the weekly conference call, according to Newman.

Veer Singh, one of the most talented and mysterious players in the New York metropolitan area, has committed to Seton Hall in the Class of 2015, his mother told SNY.tv Monday morning by phone.

Singh was originally Class of 2016 but is reclassing to 2015.

“He’s going to commit to Seton Hall,” Renee Singh, who moved to the area from Georgia in the fall, said by phone. “He’ll be going 2015.

“I think we are happy with the decision. It was more of wanting him to stay close by since I moved here for him. I like the program and I think he’ll be a good fit there.”

NCAA Basketball: Villanova at XavierThe latest bracketology from ESPN’s Joe Lunardi shows good news for the Big East.

Villanova (27-2) has replaced Gonzaga as a No. 1 seed, along with Kentucky, Virginia and Duke. The ZAGS were upset on Saturday by BYU.

Paced by projected Big East Player of the Year Darrun Hilliard, the Wildcats are now positioned as the 1 seed in the West where they could face another set of Wildcats, No. 2 Arizona, in the Regional Final at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Six Big East teams are currently safely into the field, per Lunardi, meaning 60 percent of the league would go dancing.

NCAA Basketball: Georgetown at St. JohnBy CHRIS RUSSELL

After helping push St. John’s to the brink of their first NCAA Tournament since 2011, senior forward Sir’Dominic Pointer has been named the ZAGSBLOG National Player of the Week.

For the first time since 2000, St. John’s has reached the 20-win column in back-to-back seasons. If the NCAA Tournament began today, St. John’s would be an 8 seed, according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.

The Johnnies’ success can largely be attributed to the play of the 6-foot-6 Detroit native, who appears to be a virtual lock for All-Big East First-Team honors after being named Big East Player of the Week on Monday.
