  • BROOKLYN — Cody Zeller is battling “asthmatic bronchitis,” but that didn’t stop him from wanting to get better entering Tuesday’s Legends Classic final against Georgetown at the Barclays Center.

The 7-foot sophomore center told head coach Tom Crean and the staff that he wanted to watch game film of Monday’s win over Georgia, in which he managed just six points and four rebounds in front of 47 NBA scouts who wanted to see if he was indeed worthy of the No. 1 pick next June.

Feeling better a day later, Zeller responded with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists as the Hoosiers fended off Otto Porter and the Hoyas, 82-72 in a dramatic overtime game before a mostly pro-Indiana crowd of 10,478 to win the Legends Classic.

“I felt good today,” Zeller said. “Up until today I haven’t felt so good. I’ve had some form of asmathic bronchitis or something so I couldn’t breathe very well. Tonight I finally got my wind back.”

BROOKLYN — Otto Porter arrived at the Legends Classic coming off a concussion and representing an unranked Georgetown basketball team.

He left with his NBA draft stock surging and his Hoyas sure to be ranked in the Top 25 in Monday’s poll.

Yet for all his fantastic play in 48 hours at the Barclays Center, the 6-foot-8 sophomore from Sikeston, Mo., was somehow left off the All-Tournament Team.

Indiana’s Cody Zeller, Georgetown’s Markel Starks, UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammad and Georgia’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope made the all-tourney team, with Indiana’s Jordan Hulls as the MVP.

BROOKLYN — UCLA freshmen Shabazz Muhammad and Kyle Anderson are friends, roommates and teammates.

Just rookies, they have both already suffered through injuries,  been investigated by the NCAA and subsequently cleared.

They have an obvious chemistry off the court dating to their high school days, and their chemistry on the court could go a long way in determining how far the No. 11 Bruins go this year.

So one play early in UCLA’s 60-56 victory over Georgia Tuesday night in the Legends Classic consolation game could offer a window into what the duo — one a supremely skilled passer with great vision, the other a born scorer who can put the ball in the basket a number of different ways — can accomplish down the road.

Manhattan has signed three players in the early signing period.

Former five-star recruit and elite junior college prospect Chris Thomas (Denver, Colo./Chipola College), along with incoming freshmen, 6-10 center Carlton Allen (Ewing, N.J./Life Center Academy) and 6-foot guard Tyler Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) signed their National Letters of Intent to play for the Jaspers in 2013-14.

This class fills all our needs,” said head coach STeve Masiello “We have a big time scoring wing to replace George [Beamon], a cerebral point guard to ‘stir the drink’ as they say, and a big body inside to add great depth to our front line,” said Masiello. “Overall, we are really excited about the class. BROOKLYN – At some point, Indiana University, ranked No. 1 in the nation and off to a 4-0 start, is going to have its full lineup at its disposal. It’s just not going to be Tuesday evening in time to play Georgetown in the Legends Classic final.

The freshman duo of 7-footer Peter Jurkin and 6-foot-8 small forward Hanner Mosquera-Perea had an appeal heard by the NCAA via conference call on Tuesday afternoon in an effort to have their nine-game suspensions overturned. The appeal ended at about 4 p.m. and while the hope was that a decision would be reached in time for them to suit up against the Hoyas at Barclays Center, Hoosiers head coach Tom Crean told ESPN’s Andy Katz late Monday afternoon that he wasn’t expecting a decision before the 10 p.m. tip.

Ever since Dakari Johnson announced earlier this month that he planned to move into the Class of 2013 from 2014, not much as been heard from the 6-foot-10 Montverde (Fla.) Academy big man or his family about his recruiting plans.

But his mother, Makini Campbell, spoke extensively to SNY.tv Tuesday about her son’s plans and the schools he’s considering.

Campbell reiterated that her son plans to sign in the spring period — along with fellow elite players Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, Julius Randle and Aaron Gordon — and that he is considering Florida, Georgetown, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio State and Syracuse — for now.

“Because of the early signing period, we realize some things will kind of change,” Campbell told SNY.tv.

Even though many observers feel that Karl Towns is a lock to announce for Kentucky on Dec. 4, don’t rule out Duke.

The 6-foot-11 Towns out of St. Joe’s-Metuchen has a list that includes numerous other schools, including Florida, N.C. State, North Carolina, Villanova, Rutgers and Seton Hall, but sources close to the situation believe it will come down to Duke and Kentucky.

Towns has a strong relationship with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewksi, against whom he played when he was on the Dominican Republic National Team this summer and Coach K coached Team USA.
