  • NEW YORK — After his team, the No. 2 team in the nation, threw a pretty good beatdown on No. 11 Kansas in a game that began Tuesday night and ended early Wednesday morning, John Calipari had this to say about the Kentucky Wildcats.

“This is not a good team yet,” he said. “You know, we’re not bad. But we’re not a good team yet.”

That statement accurately sums up the current state of Calipari’s club, but it should also strike fear into the rest of the college basketball world.

NEW YORK — In a cordoned off area at Madison Square Garden, far removed from the ESPN cameras and the horde of reporters covering the game, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski shared a private moment with his family.

The group included not only his wife Mickie, and his immediate family, but his extended Duke family, too.

Former players Bobby Hurley, Jay Williams, Shane Battier, Mike Dunleavy, Jay Bilas, Carlos Boozer, Elton Brand, Billy King, Roshown McLeod and many others listened in as Coach K told them all career victory No. 903 — the one that moved him past his mentor Bob Knight and into first place on the all-time Division 1 wins list– was a “program win.”

“I hope all you former players still view me as your coach the way I still view Coach Knight as mine,” Coach K told them after his Duke squad beat Michigan State, 74-69. “I’ve never called him anything else.”

    Ah, Coach Knight.

NEW YORK — Tom Izzo figured he was in a bit of a no-win situation entering Tuesday night’s game against Duke.

“I was either gonna be the guy who threw the record-breaker to Henry Aaron or I was gonna be the guy who shot Bambi,” Izzo cracked after Michigan State lost to Duke, 74-69, to give Coach K career victory No. 903 at Madison Square Garden.

In the end, Izzo’s players didn’t have enough artillery to kill Bambi.

Coach K survived and advanced past his mentor Bob Knight into first place on the all-time Division 1 wins list.

Kevin Ware will soon suit up at Louisville.

A 6-4 guard from Conyers, Ga., Ware met NCAA intial eligibility requirements and will join the team Dec. 14, the day after the fall semester final examinations.

Ware initially signed with Tennessee, but was released from his Letter of Intent after the Bruce Pearl firing. He later committed to Central Florida, but changed course after UCF came under investigation by the NCAA. The investigation led to the resignation of AD Keith Tribble. UCF coach Donnie Jones was also suspended three games.

Count Tony Parker and Shaq Goodwin among the growing list of 2012 basketball stars who will likely sign during the late period in April.

That list already includes Shabazz Muhammad, Anthony Bennett, Ricardo Gathers, Torian Graham, Jordan Goodman, Devonta Pollard, Chris Obekpa, Winston Shepard, Savon Goodman and possibly Jarnell Stokes.

The 6-foot-9 Parker told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he is “almost positive” that he will wait until at least the middle of the season to decide between Duke, Ohio State, UCLA and Memphis.
