    UCONN’S THABEET, CINCY’S GATES HONORED

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Connecticut center Hasheem Thabeet and Cincinnati forward Yancy Gates have been chosen as the recipients of the BIG EAST weekly men’s basketball honors through games of Sunday, Feb. 8.

    Thabeet was named BIG EAST Player of the Week after he led the Huskies to a pair of victories that included a 68-51 triumph at Louisville, which entered the game undefeated in conference play. Thabeet finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots against the Cardinals. In a 69-61 win over Michigan, he scored 17 points, grabbed 12 boards and blocked six shots. For the two games, the junior was 10-of-13 from the floor and 11-of-13 from the foul line.

    Gates was tabbed as BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after he posted averages of 13.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Bearcats. In a 93-83 win over Notre Dame, he finished with 15 points and eight boards. While helping UC to a 64-62 overtime victory at Georgetown, Gates had 11 points and seven rebounds. For the season, he is averaging 10.3 points and 6.2 rebounds..

    BIG EAST Honor Roll
    Deonta Vaughn, Cincinnati, G, Jr.

    Averaged 25.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a 2-0 week. Scored 34 points in a win over Notre Dame.

    DeJuan Blar, Pittsburgh, C, So.
    Finished with 32 points and 14 rebounds in a win at DePaul. Averaged 25.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week.

    Jeremy Hazell, Seton Hall, G, So.
    Averaged 26.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week. Tallied 31 points in a victory over St. John’s.

    Jonny Flynn, Syracuse, G, So.
    Averaged 22.0 points and 6.5 assists in a 1-1 week. Scored 22 points against in a win versus West Virginia and a loss at Villanova.

    Dante Cunningham, Villanova, F, Sr.
    Averaged 21.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week. Posted 31 points and nine rebounds in a victory over Syracuse.
