  • Between the Markieff Morris shooting incident and the Sherron Collins not practicing situation, it has not been a good few weeks for defending NCAA champion Kansas.

Now comes a report by Chris Broussard of ESPN The Magazine that Mario Chalmers and DArrell Arthur were thrown out of the NBA’s rookie transition program at Doral Arrowwood in Rye Brook, N.Y. on Wednesday morning after being caught in their hotel room with marijuana. Jeff Goodman added in his story that the players also had women in their room Tuesday night.

Bloomfield Tech coach Nick Mariniello, one of the most accomplished high school coaches in the state of New Jersey, has decided to step down after nine years.

Mariniello has always been a class act and one of our favorite coaches to deal with.

“I have resigned from my positon as head boys basketball coach at Bloomfield Tech,” Mariniello, 41, said. “I have a great sense of pride, accomplishment and gratitude. I want to thank my former players, my current players and my assistant coaches, Ken Pignatello, Joe Macchi and Derrick Bobbitt. I want to thank them for their support and dedication to the program.

Norm Roberts officially announced the hirings of Kimani Young and Oswald Cross, hirings reported earlier on ZAGSBLOG.

I’m very excited about Kimani and Oswald joining us, who bring great energy and enthusiasm to St. John’s. They are both New York City guys who have done great jobs in AAU and grassroots basketball. They have both really gotten involved in the lives of young people, not just with basketball, but also with the academic and social aspects of their players’ lives as well,” said Roberts. “They are both very hungry, and are excited to get their foot in the door in the business of college basketball.”

Michael Glover’s career at Seton Hall appears to be over.

Glover’s motions for a restraining order were denied Tuesday, according to the court documents: “TEXT ORDER denying 2 Motion for TRO. So Ordered by Judge William E Smith on 8/29/2008. (Geile, Wendy) (Entered: 08/29/2008).

“The NCAA carefully reviewed Mr. Glover’s academic qualifications to determine if he was eligible to compete in college sports his first year of college,” Erik Christianson of the NCAA said in an email. “That process involved several reviews, and ultimately he was deemed a nonqualifier for his first year of college.”

It’s unclear where Glover goes from here. JUCO? Overseas? The NBA?

Sixteen teams will lace up their shoes and put on their game faces to compete in the inaugural “Chairmen of the Boards” 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament to benefit Tuesday’s Children. The tournament will take place on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hunter College in New York City.

Tuesday’s Children is the premiere non-profit organization serving the needs of the 9/11 community, providing a wide-range of programming from mentoring, to advocacy for children, to next-step life skills and leadership training for 9/11 families and rescue and recovery workers.

St. John’s Norm Roberts will lead an all-star cast of NCAA Division I men’s basketball coaches who will serve as guest coaches for the round robin tournament. Coaching alongside Roberts will be Matt Doherty (Southern Methodist University), Seth Greenberg (Virginia Tech), Jim Larranaga (George Mason), Tom Pecora (Hofstra), Bob McKillop (Davidson), Paul Hewitt (Georgia Tech) and Bobby Cremins (College of Charleston). St. John’s Hall of Fame coach Lou Carnesecca, ESPN college basketball analyst Len Elmore and basketball analyst Billy Packer are also expected to make special guest appearances.
