Cuban Won’t Initiate Minority Purchase of Mets

By Adam Zagoria on February 02, 2011, 10:36PM

NEW YORK – Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said he won’t initiate a bid to purchase a minority stake in the Mets, but he would consider it if they reached out.

“On the Mets, I’m not gonna chase it, I’m not gonna call out [to them],” Cuban said before his Mavericks beat the Knicks, 113-97, Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

“If they want to contact me, if they have an interest and they think I’d be a good owner, I’d take their call and I’d be more than happy to discuss it. But I’m done chasing and bidding on baseball teams.” (more…)

Carmelo on the Drama

By Adam Zagoria on February 01, 2011, 11:03AM

Carmelo Anthony spoke about the Drama with reporters in New Jersey before the Nets beat the Nuggets, 115-91.

Here’s some key quotes:

“The CBA is in the back of my mind, but as far as being afraid to play this out, I’m not. If that’s what it’s going to take, then so be it. I’m with that…”

“If I sit here and tell you I’m willing to lose $15-20 million, then I’ll be lying to you. But at the same time, this has never been about the money. In my career so far, I think I’ve made enough money. Now I can focus on just trying to win a championship. That’s the only thing that’s on my plate and on my mind right now…”

He also said he never received a text message from Amar’e Stoudemire.

“I’ve read that, that he supposedly texted me. I didn’t get it. I didn’t get that text.”

Nets Owner Had No Love for Knicks’ Mozgov

By Adam Zagoria on October 19, 2010, 8:21PM

NEW YORK — Even though they are both Russians involved in the high-profile world of the NBA, Timofey Mozgov and Mikhail Prokhorov have never met.

“I know he has money and he’s really smart,” Mozgov, who figures to start at center when the Knicks open the regular season Oct. 27 at Toronto, said of the Nets’ billionaire owner before scoring four points and grabbing three rebounds in the Knicks’ 117-111 win over the Nets at Madison Square Garden.

Smart, but not smart enough to sign Mozgov to a contract?

Wilpon Says Minaya Made a ‘Very Large Mistake’

By Adam Zagoria on July 28, 2009, 8:15PM

A day after the now infamous Rubin-Gate press conference at Citi Field, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon has come out publicly to apologize and say that Mets GM Omar Minaya made a “very large mistake” in questioning Adam Rubin’s motives in writing the Tony Bernazard stories.

You can say that again.

“I think he really understands he made a very large mistake here. He apologized to ownership, he apologized to the staff,” Wilpon said. “Omar has told me he’s remorseful about what he said.

“I can only apologize from the organization’s standpoint. Omar made a mistake and he admitted to me he made a mistake and he’s apologetic for his mistake.”

Wilpon gave Minaya a vote of confidence as the team’s GM despite its struggles on the field and enough off-the-field distractions to fill a circus tent. (more…)

Mets’ Minaya Digging Own Grave

By Adam Zagoria on July 27, 2009, 11:41PM

This was supposed to be the day that the Mets moved past the Tony Bernazard fiasco and marched boldly forward without him.

Mets GM Omar Minaya should have just gone into his press conference at Citi Field and made a brief statement.

Something to the effect of: We have investigated the reports of Tony Bernazard’s improper behavior in the minor leagues and after conducting that investigation I decided it would be best for the organization to let Tony go.

Something short and sweet like that would’ve enabled the Mets to move past this embarrassing chapter in their increasingly tumultuous history.

Instead, Minaya rambled along and decided to question the credibility of Daily News reporter Adam Rubin, who covers the Mets for the paper and broke the Bernazard stories.

It looks like Minaya wanted to exact revenge on Rubin for bringing to light the embarrassing stories about his friend Bernazard.

“You got to understand this: Adam for the past couple of years has lobbied for a player development position. He has lobbied myself, he has lobbied Tony,” Minaya said. (more…)

Yankees Get Their Man

By Adam Zagoria on December 10, 2008, 10:22AM

The Yankees got their man.

They reached an agreement with left-handed free agent pitcher CC Sabathia, according to the New York Post.

ESPN is saying it’s for seven years and $160 million. The Yankees initially offered six years and $140 million.

Looks like the Yankees haven’t been impacted too badly by the recession.

Sabathia, 28, went 17-10 with a 2.70 ERA last season. The year before he won the AL Cy Young.

Sabathia, who was a workhorse down the stretch for the Milwaukee Brewers, is exactly what the Yankees need. A front-of-the-rotation ace who can pitch the first game of any postseason series, if the Yankees can get back there.

Sabathia joins Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain in a rotation that was decimated by injury last season. The Yankees are also pursuing free agents A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. Bringing back Andy Pettitte is also an option. Youngsters Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy are still in the mix as well.

The Sabathia deals comes a day after the Mets announced a three-year, $37-million deal with closer Francisco Rodriguez.
