Chris Thomas, the Rivals No. 1 shooting guard in the Class of 2013, has enrolled at Chipola (Fla.) College and is working on his GED.

“”Yes, he’s at Chipola College and he’s with coach [Jake] Headrick. It was just a situation where we have to do what’s best for Chris,” Latonia Smith, his grandmother, told SNY.tv by phone.

The news was previously reported by several outlets.

Thomas left South Kent (Conn.) after making previous stops in his home state of Colorado, Bowie (Md.) Princeton Day and Phoenix (Ariz.) Westwind Prep.

“South Kent was very good to us, Princeton was good to us,” Smith said.

Smith said the plan was for the 6-foot-5 Thomas to obtain his GED at Chipola and then begin taking courses there. Ideally, he would be ready to enroll in a Division 1 school for the 2013-14 season.

She said Xavier, Missouri, Iowa State and Seton Hall were still his leading suitors, and that Seton Hall had reached out to Headrick.

Xavier appears to remain the leader.

“He’s going to get out in 2013 so he could start the D-1 college in 2013-14,” Smith said.
