Kansas guard Melvin Council Jr. is the latest player to be granted a preliminary injunction, which also grants him an additional year of collegiate eligibility.
Council, who’s currently enrolled as a student at Kansas, was granted the injunction Tuesday by Judge Daniel J. Doyle at the Monroe County Court in New York.
Having spent one year at Kansas, Council appeared 35 games for the Jayhawks last year and averaged 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.
He’s spent three total seasons at three programs at the Division I level, also spending a season at Wagner and St. Bonaventure before transferring to Kansas.
The NCAA strongly opposed Council’s motion for additional eligibility, arguing that he had already been granted numerous eligibility exceptions with the recent NCAA ruling benefiting former JUCO players.
Council’s ruling comes days after Kansas guard Tre White was also granted immediate eligibility by a court in Indiana, with the Dallas native quickly announcing his intentions to return to Kansas.
With a reunion between Council and Kansas likely, the Jayhawks will be able to solidify its starting lineup as the program welcomed a slew of newcomers this offseason.
A once young and inexperienced lineup, a starting nucleus of top-ranked high school recruit Tyran Stokes and two of the most experienced players in the Big 12 will make the Jayhawks an immediate contender in the conference.
Though, it’s increasingly more likely Council will return to Kansas, a final decision has not been made by the Rochester, N.Y. native.
