Michigan has officially named Mike Boynton as its interim head coach, following Dusty May’s departure for the Dallas Mavericks on Monday, per release.
The Wolverines are coming fresh off a national championship win over UConn, in which Boynton served his second season as an assistant coach with the program.
Prior to joining May’s staff in Ann Arbor, Boynton spent seven seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma State, qualifying for one NCAA Tournament, in which the Cowboys reached the Round of 32.
Across those seven seasons, he amassed a record of 119-109 with Oklahoma State.
In a press release, Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel said that the program views Boynton as an invaluable member of its staff.
“Mike has been an invaluable member of our staff and a respected leader throughout his career,” said Manuel. “He knows what Michigan Basketball represents and has earned the trust and respect of our student-athletes and everyone in our program. His experience, character and commitment to our values make him the right person to guide the team during this transition.”
Looking to defend its second national championship in program history, Michigan enters next season with the No. 2 overall recruiting class in the nation, according to 247Sports.
