Pitt has officially added Stony Brook transfer and 2021 American East Defensive Player of the Year Mouhamadou Gueye, head coach Jeff Capel announced Tuesday.

“Mo [Mouhamadou] is a terrific athlete with a defensive mindset and a strong all-around skill set,” Capel said. “We love his competitiveness and ability to play above the rim on both ends of the floor. He gives us another versatile, experienced forward who can help impact winning.”

The 6-foot-9, 210-pound forward out of Staten Island, NY, averaged 9.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 3.1 blocks per game last season at Stony Brook, earning third team all-conference and all-defensive team honors.

He joins fellow transfers Jamarius Burton (Wichita State/Texas Tech), Dan Oladapo (Oakland), as well as JUCO standout Chris Payton (Indian Hills JC) and prep school standout Nate Santos.

Gueye began his college career at JUCO Monroe College from 2016-18, helping lead the Mustangs to a berth in the 2017 NJCAA National Tournament.

In his two seasons at Stony Brook from 2019-21, Mouhamadou averaged 8.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 2.4 blocks per game in 54 career contest. He shot 43.7 percent from the field and 71.7 percent from the free-throw line.

Gueye set a school record with 3.1 blocks per game during the 2020-21 season. His career mark of 2.38 blocks per game is a school record.
