Cal got its second piece of good news this week when Grant Mullins picked the Bears over Syracuse and Michigan.
A 6-foot-3 graduate transfer, Mullins will be immediately eligible in 2016-17 for coach Cuonzo Martin.
Cal’s first chunk of good news came when Ivan Rabb, a projected first-round NBA Draft pick, opted to return to campus for his sophomore season. Cal will lose freshman wing Jaylen Brown — a projected top-5 pick, to the Draft.
A Burlington, Ontario native, Mullins averaged 13.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists for the Lions, who won the CIT championship last month.
He can help offset the loss of graduating point guard Tyrone Wallace.
“I know they lose a few guys to the NBA so I think I can come in and help at the point guard position, as best I can,” Mullins told Scout.com. “That’s kind of where I think I fit in, right now. I think that’s their idea. The coaches have to see me in person — they’ve seen film, obviously — they have to see how my game fits in with what they’re trying to do, and however they decide to play me, I’m happy with, and I’ll do whatever I can to help the team have success.”
