NEW YORK –– For all the attention paid last week to DeAndre Ayton and Mohamed Bamba in the nationally televised Cal Supreme-PSA Cardinals game at the Nike EYBL stop in Brooklyn, Brandon McCoy may have been the best player in that particular game.

The 7-footer went for 17 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 1 block as Cal Supreme lost to the PSA Cardinals, 69-68, in front of a Who’s Who of college coaches, including Kentucky’s John Calipari and North Carolina’s Roy Williams.

Entering the game, Ayton was ranked No. 1 in the Class of 2017 by ESPN, with Bamba at No. 4 and McCoy at No. 9.

McCoy’s effort on the weekend helped him pick up an offer from Maryland last Saturday.

“I plan on narrowing my list by the end of the summer,” McCoy said. “Arizona, UCLA, Cal, USC and Michigan State are working hard. Basically, I’m looking for a family oriented winning team and if they offer my major.”

McCoy said he had yet receive an offer from Kentucky, North Carolina or Duke.

“If that had happened, I could tell somebody,” McCoy said. “Those are winning programs. I’m not saying if I got an offer from one of them, I would cut everyone else off, but I’m saying I would like to get an offer from them.”

McCoy is talented off the court, too. He plays five instruments and sees parallels between basketball and jazz.

“I play five instruments and music is important to me,” he said. “I like jazz and listening to jazz before a game helps me think.”
