Former UConn guard Sam Cassell Jr. has committed to transfer to Iona, a source told SNY.tv.

Iona has now added Cassell and Jon Severe (Fordham) as transfers, potentially giving the Gaels the best immediately eligible transfer backcourt duo in the country. Iona plays a four-guard rotation in an up-tempo offense.

Cassell Jr. averaged just 2.2 points in limited time this past season at UConn.

Iona associate head coach Jared Grasso was the lead recruiter for both players as the Gaels looked to replace A.J. English and Isaiah Williams, who both graduate. English was invited to the Portsmouth Invitational and hopes to get drafted or become an NBA free agent.

Iona (22-11) won the MAAC Tournament championship and lost to Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
