  • 4_3600246Taurean Thompson, a 6-foot-9 power forward who plays for Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley at St. Anthony’s, visited Maryland on Sunday, his mom confirmed to SNY.tv.

“He took a visit yesterday,” she said. “He loved Maryland and the staff. There were hardly any students on campus so it was quiet and really no distractions. It gave us more time to have a thorough detailed conversation and get our questions answered.”

Thompson has battled injuries throughout his high school and AAU career but is a talented big man with a high ceiling. He is currently coming off a broken rib suffered during the second half of the AAU season.

“He has a great shooting touch and range with a good skill set and feel for the game,” St. Anthony’s assistant Eric Harrield told SNY.tv. “Once he gets healthy he has the potential to play at the highest level.”

GilesHarry Giles, the No. 1-rated player in the Class of 2016, has set five official visit dates.

The 6-foot-10 Giles will visit Wake Forest Sept. 19, North Carolina on Sept. 25, Kansas on Oct. 10, Kentucky on Oct. 16 for Big Blue Madness and Duke on Oct. 31, as first reported by Jon Rothstein.

Giles wrote in his USA Today blog that he and his best friend Jayson Tatum would be a “problem” should they team up at Duke.

“Of course everyone wants to know if we’re still planning to play together like we’ve been talking about and it’s definitely something that we still always talk about,” the 6-foot-10 Giles wrote. “He knows I’ve gotta do what’s best for me the same way he did, but Duke is a school that’s high on my list and if it works out like that it’s gonna be a problem!

Pete Sampras believes Roger Federer can still win an eighteenth Grand Slam title despite turning 34 last week.

Federer will bid once again at the upcoming US Open in New York to end his long Grand Slam drought, the Swiss last winning a major title at Wimbledon in 2012.

Asked during an exclusive interview with The Tennis Podcast if Federer still had one last Grand Slam title left in him, Sampras said: “I do think there is. I think he’s playing well, he’s fit, he hits the ball great, he’s doing everything that he’s been doing for years.

“It is tougher as you get older and now Novak [Djokovic] and [Andy] Murray, they’re in their prime now.

“I think for Roger to win, things need to fall into place. I think if he has to play Murray, Djokovic, then Rafa in one week or back-to-back, it gets more difficult.

Mustapha HeronAuburn coach Bruce Pearl scored a huge and unexpected recruiting coup on Sunday when he landed Mustapha Heron.

The 6-foot-5 wing out of Sacred Heart (CT) High School and onetime Pittsburgh commit had been working with a top five of St. John’s, Auburn, Mississippi State, Marquette and Alabama. He was on an unofficial visit to Auburn on Sunday.

“I had no idea,” Heron told Scout’s Evan Daniels when asked if he knew he’d commit on the visit. “But I got a vibe here that I didn’t get at any other schools that I visited. It was a family-oriented thing.”

NY Rens coach Andy Borman compared Heron to a young James Harden, even if he is not the long-range shooter that the Houston Rockets star is.
