  • St. John’s Moves Up to No. 20 in AP Poll; Harrison, Jordan Honored; Seton Hall’s Whitehead Named Rookie of the Week Again

    NCAA Basketball: St. John's at SyracuseSt. John’s (8-1) moved up to No. 20 in the latest AP Poll after going 2-0 last week, including Sunday’s rout of Fordham at Madison Square Garden.

    Red Storm senior D’Angelo Harrison was named Big East Player of the Week for the second straight week and Seton Hall freshman guard Isaiah Whitehead earned Rookie of the week honors for the second straight week.

    St. John’s sophomore guard Rysheed Jordan, who tied his career-high with 24 against Fordham, and Seton Hall junior Sterling Gibbs also made the Big East honor roll.

    In other St. John’s new, 6-11 big man Joey De La Rosa may be eligible to play beginning Friday, sources told SNY.tv. The semester ends Wednesday.

    BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK

    D’Angelo Harrison, St. John’s, G, Sr.

    Harrison takes weekly honors for the second straight week after helping the Red Storm to a pair of victories. He averaged 24.0 points, shot 61.5 percent from the floor and was 12-of-12 from the foul line in wins over Fordham (74-53) and Fairleigh Dickinson (74-52). Harrison leads the BIG EAST in scoring with a 19.7 scoring average and is sixth in rebounding at 7.2.

    BIG EAST ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

    Isaiah Whitehead, Seton Hall, G, Fr.

    Whitehead wins rookie honors for the second consecutive week after averaging 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in two games. In a 77-68 loss at No. 11/11 Wichita State, Whitehead scored a game-high 23 points, which inlcuded 4-of-7 shooting from 3-point range. He had five points and eight boards in a 67-52 win over Saint Peter’s.

    BIG EAST Honor Roll

    Austin Chatman, Creighton, G, Sr.

    Averaged 21.5 points and 6.0 assists in a 1-1 week. Had a career-high 24 points and eight assists in a double OT win versus South Dakota.

    Rysheed Jordan, St. John’s, G, So.

    Averaged 16.0 points and shot 60 percent from the floor in a 2-0 week. Tied his career high with 24 points against Fordham.

    Sterling Gibbs, Seton Hall, G, Jr.

    Averaged 15.5 points and 3.5 assists in a 1-1 week. Had 19 points in a 77-68 loss at No. 11 Wichita State.

    Josh Hart, Villanova, G, So.

    Scored a career-high 20 points in an 85-62 win over Temple and averaged 15.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week.

    Dee Davis, Xavier, G, Sr.

    In a 2-0 week that included a 74-58 win at Missouri, he avearged 12.5 points, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals.
