  • Oregon added a late commitment for the 2014 class Sunday when Dillon Brooks, a 6-foot-5 Canadian shooting guard from Findlay Prep, announced he was reclassing and verbally committing to the Ducks.

Brooks Tweeted: “I’ve dreamt about this day! Blessed to announce that I have committed to the University of Oregon & will be a duck this up & coming season!”

Brooks plays for the CIA Bounce AAU program.

“Dillon Brooks has reclassed to 2014 and will attend Oregon,” CIA Bounce coach Tony McIntyre said. “He had an amazing summer and is an outstanding scoring machine. The fit, style and minutes available will allow Dillon to make his mark early and contribute to the Ducks from the start.”

CHICAGO — Jalen Poyser recently set his five official visits to Hawaii (Sept. 6), Oklahoma, Cal, Rhode Island and Dayton, but UNLV and St. Mary’s are also now involved.

Over the weekend at the Nike Global Challenge, Poyser also proved that many coaches will regret missing out.

Poyser made his finalists look smart in Chicago, averaging 20.5 points in four games to place himself among the weekend scoring leaders. He earned International All-Tournament honors in the process.

FedRoger Federer will head into the U.S. Open on a high note.

Federer won his sixth Western & Southern Open crown and 80th career title by dispatching David Ferrer, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in Sunday’s final. Despite being extended to a decisive third set, he improved to 16-0 all-time against the Spaniard.

“It feels great,” Federer said. “I really enjoy playing here. I’ve played some really good tennis here over the years, so it’s nice to come back and win it again.”

Federer has won 18 of his last 20 matches, including winning the title in Halle (Germany), reaching the Wimbledon final and advancing to last week’s final in Toronto, where he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Battle USAAfter winning two gold medals and the Peach Jam this summer, New Jersey’s top prep hoops stars can lay claim to being among the best in the nation.

Tyus Battle, the 6-foot-5 combo guard from Edison (N.J.) Gill St. Bernard’s, won a gold medal Saturday with the U.S. U17 team at the U17 World Championship in Dubai.

“When I heard the buzzer go off, I went crazy,” Battle said after the USA beat Australia, 99-92, in the gold medal game. “It was a hard-fought game and Australia was a really good team and I’m just so happy we pulled it out.”

In June, Isaiah Briscoe, the 6-3 point guard from Roselle (N.J.) Catholic, also won gold at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Colorado Springs, CO.
