It is the rare true freshman that plays big minutes for Fran Dunphy. It has happened in the coaches’ seven years at Temple, but it’s been clear throughout the years that the veteran head coach prefers his younger players spend time learning behind the veterans before shining themselves a year or two later.
Those who have seen significant court time early in their Owls careers are all familiar names. Ryan Brooks, who went on to score over 1200 points, saw just over 10 mpg back in 2006-07. Argentinian point guard Juan Fernandez, who would start for three seasons in cherry and white, averaged just over five points per game in 2008-09. The year before Fernandez it was current Philadelphia 76ers center Lavoy Allen who made the biggest impact as a freshman under Dunphy, starting 32 contests and averaging 8.1 ppg and 5.7 rpg.
This year, a new name is going to join that small group. Josh Brown, a 6-foot-3 New Jersey native, looks certain to play a huge role for this years’ Owls.
“This summer, [Dunphy] told me that I’d be one of the few freshman to ever play for him a significant amount of minutes,” Brown told CoBL. “I’m happy and I’m just trying to go out there and prove him right that I can go out there and play significant minutes.”
