NEW YORK — Andy Roddick gave himself quite a birthday present.

Playing on his 28th birthday in temperatures that reached the mid-90s, Roddick, the 2003 champion, easily dispatched Frenchman Stephane Robert, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round of the U.S. Open in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

His wife, the model Brooklyn Decker, cheered him on from his player’s box.
