  • Elizabeth (NJ) St. Patrick point guard Kyrie Irving will visit Kentucky Oct. 15.

“We are going to take a visit a to the University of Kentucky,” said Drederick Irving, Kyrie’s dad.

Kentucky would be Irving’s fourth official visit, following Duke (Sept. 25), Indiana (Oct. 2) and Texas A&M (Oct. 9).

That would leave a fifth official visit to a group that includes Seton Hall, UConn and Georgia Tech.

The Irvings have had in-homes with Texas A&M, Indiana, Kentucky, Duke and Georgia Tech.

UConn came in for an in-home Wednesday and Seton Hall comes tonight.

Just got back from the Federer-del Potro U.S. Open final and I’m still a little shocked at what transpired…also a little sad that the Open is over. I’m a big tennis guy and these are two of my favorite weeks of the year.

Props to my boy Chris Chaney, the former Patterson (NC) School coach, who predicted del Potro earlier Monday (maybe before that). Someday I plan to cover Wimbledon and maybe even the Australian Open. So stay tuned for that…

Anyway, here are the hoops highlights of the night:

**Dallas Episcopal point guard Phil Pressey confirmed to me via text tonight that he committed to Missouri.

    “Yes, I did,” he said.

The 5-foot-10 Pressey is ranked No. 13 among point guards in the Class of 2010. He chose Mizzou over LSU, Baylor, UCLA and Arizona.

The Big East football coaches conference was today and here are some highlights.

South Florida QB Matt Grothe threw for 208 yards and two TDs, becoming the Big East’s all-time leader in total offense to help South Florida down Western Kentucky 35-13 Saturday.

The senior QB added 53 yards rushing to boost his career total yardage to 10,702, breaking former West Virginia QB Pat White’s record of 10,329.

“I think everybody has a lot of respect for

The Patterson School, a basketball powerhouse in Lenoir, N.C.,  is shutting down for a year and basketball coach Chris Chaney is now a free agent.

“I think the school will open back up but I doubt the basketball program will be like it was,” Chaney said.

The story was first reported by Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com.

Chaney said he plans to visit a number of college practices during the year and plan his next move.

“I’m going to take the year off coaching and go to a lot of NBA camps and a lot of college camps,” he said. “Go to all the colleges that I have good relationships with and go see practices and work my next move. I have a lot more time to make my next move,” he said.

Ahmad Ibrahim, a 6-5 guard who was at Patterson, is now at St. Benedict’s Prep with Dan Hurley.
