  • Jarrid Famous Update; Friars Receive Honors

    Several coaches checked in Sunday night to watch Jarrid Famous, the 6-foot-11, 235-pound center from Westchester Community College.

    Bobby Gonzalez and Derm Player of Seton Hall, Pat Skerry of Providence and an Oregon coach watched Famous drop 21 and 10 in a blowout of Rockland Community College. He is averaging 23.9 points and 11.5 boards on the year.

    WCC leaves tonight for a tournament at the College of Southern Idaho Jan 1-3.

    Famous officially visited Seton Hall in the fall and said he enjoyed it.

    “It was a great visit,” he told me for a story on SNY.tv. “It showed me a lot about Seton Hall that I didn’t know.”

    UConn, West Virginia, DePaul, Villanova, Louisville, Providence, Missouri, LSU and Oregon are some of the other schools involved. Famous will sign in the spring and have two years of eligibility remaining.

    “That’s my goal,” Famous said. “Wait to the spring, see how it goes.”

    ***Two former St. Anthony of Jersey City stars received Player of the Week honors last week.

    Ahmad Nivins was named Atlantic 10 Player of the week at St. Joseph’s.

    Nivins scored a season-high 26 points and pulled down 16 boards in a 71-67 win over Cornell on Dec. 23. The 6-9 forward shot 10-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line.

    Nivins is averaging 18.8 points and 10.0 rebounds.

    Also, Fordham frosh Jio Fontan of St. Anthony was named A-10 Rookie of the Week. The freshman guard scored 18 points, including the game-winning basket with 43 seconds remaining, as Fordham edged New Hampshire on Dec. 23, 60-56.. He made 6-of-10 shots from the field and 6-of-7
    from the line. Fontan added three assists and two rebounds. This is his second Rookie of the Week honor.
