Five-star forward Asa Montgomery has committed to Duke and head coach Jon Scheyer, he announced via Rivals.
A 6-foot-7 wing from Hillgrove (GA), Montgomery chose the Blue Devils over LSU, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and UConn.
“His overall improvement and versatility has stood out,” ESPN’s Paul Biancardi told ZAGSBLOG. “He plays with confidence and humility.
“Offensively, he has demonstrated the ability to knock down a three-point shot, then get behind the defense for a back door layup on the next possession.
“He shows defensive ability guarding his man and has the versatility to switch onto both bigger and smaller players.
“Montgomery proved he can excel in a vital supporting role on a winning team, helping the USA win gold in FIBA U17 World Cup.”
Montgomery originally visited Duke on Oct. 2 and visited all four of the schools previously mentioned before committing and becoming another big-time pickup for Scheyer and the Blue Devils.
His summer this year was a tale of two stories, as he competed for AOT on the Nike EYCL circuit and then spent time playing for Team USA at the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup in Turkey.
Throughout his AAU season with AOT, Montgomery dominated at every facet of the game, averaging 27.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1.9 blocks and 1.4 steals per game during his breakout campaign.
When moving on to compete for Team USA in Turkey, Montgomery played a smaller role on the USA Basketball’s loaded U17 roster, where he focused more on defensive energy and rebounding to help lead the team to its 8th title in the event’s history.
With the commitment of Montgomery, Duke has now landed three commits in its recruiting class for the class of 2027, with the Georgia native joining Australian guard Luke Paul and top-15 recruit Kager Knueppel, who’s the younger brother of former Duke star Kon Knueppel.
