Frank Sinatra once said “The best revenge is massive success.”
Avalon earned a bit of revenge in the Annual Cape May-Avalon Tennis Challenge held August 15th at the Cape May Tennis Center.
In the informal showdown featuring four men’s doubles teams from each area, Avalon prevailed 6 matches to 2, avenging last year’s narrow loss to the Cape May crew. Each match was played to a 10-game pro set with a 10-point tiebreak at 9-all. The two teams celebrated their fellowship afterward with drinks, hoagies and laughs on the tennis club’s pavilion.
Despite the loss, Cape May’s No. 1 team of Joe Kramer and Andrew Eisenstein earned informal MVP honors after taking down Avalon’s No. 1 team of Tom Anapol and Mike Schnably (10-2) and the No. 2 team of Charlie Dent and Chris Herdelin (10-9).
Anapol/Schnably and Dent/Herdelin each won their other matches in the round robin format, while Avalon’s No. 3 team (Pete Soens and Bernard Ilkhanoff) and No. 4 squad (Lee Rudy and Adam Zagoria) both swept their two matches.
“After last year’s loss, we reloaded with a very strong and deep squad, and had four quality doubles teams,” said Zagoria, the Avalon captain. “Our depth helped us get the big win over the Cape May guys.”
Said Kramer, the Cape May captain and a four-time winner of the Cape May Doubles Tournament: “The Cape May Tennis club has a long tradition of tennis excellence and outreach to other local tennis communities.”
