Missouri transfer Jevon Porter is set to return to Loyola Marymount for his senior season after utilizing his final year of eligibility, On3’s Joe Tipton first reported.
After averaging 6.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in just 12 appearances for the Tigers last season, Porter is set to become the latest “Marfo” in college basketball.
For reference, “Marfo” is a term used when a player transfers away from a schools, spends time elsewhere but later returns to his original school, similar to when Kevin Marfo did so when transferring from Quinnipiac to Texas A&M and then back to Quinnipiac the following offseason.
Porter has spent three of his four college seasons playing in the WCC, also spending two seasons at Loyola Marymount’s in-conference opponent Pepperdine, where he appeared in 52 games for the Waves.
He ultimately made the decision to take a jump in competition and enroll at the same school his brother, Michael, was a well-known recruit before battling injuries. In similar fashion as his brother, Jevon’s season was cut short due to injuries.
In an article published by the Columbia Daily Tribune, Porter was seeking an additional year of eligibility via an injury redshirt, so it’s unclear if his fifth year will be courtesy of that or the recent injunction granting eligibility to members of the high school class of 2022.
Following the departure of Gonzaga, the WCC is likely to be as wide-open as it’s ever been and the Lions are making a push as head coach Stan Johnson looks to win the conference for the first time during his tenure.
Porter’s return to Los Angeles will be an important one, as he averaged 12.5 points and 7.2 rebounds for the program during his junior season, prior to his transfer to Missouri.
