The NBA’s war on tanking continues with a set of rules changing the way the lottery system favors teams.

The “3-2-1 Lottery” expands the lottery count from 14 to 16 teams while decreasing the odds for the worst teams in the league.

Each team participating in the Draft Lottery will receive three, two or one lottery ball for the drawing. Team’s that failed to make the playoffs or play-in tournament will recieve three lottery balls, with the exception of the three worst records in the NBA who will be “draft relegated” and lose one of their lottery balls.

No team’s pick will be permitted to be the first pick in two consecutive NBA Drafts or a top-five pick in three consecutive NBA Drafts.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has made it clear that it is the NBA’s mission to disincentivize tanking and the changes to the lottery are the latest example of that.

The full set of rules can be seen on the NBA’s official page.
