Auburn on Thursday landed a commitment from junior college standout Chad Baker-Mazara, a high-scoring wing from Northwest Florida State College.

He averaged 15.2 points and 3,6 boards last season at the junior college level.

“Coach [Bruce] Pearl is getting a very good basketball player,” said Northwest Florida State coach Steve Demeo. “Chad’s IQ and understanding of the game are elite. He also can shoot it with the best of them from long distance.”

A native of the Dominican Republic, Baker-Mazara was recruited by Auburn assistant Ira Bowman, with whom he spent time on his recent visit. Bowman is a New Jersey native and Baker-Mazara briefly attended Colonia High School.

“I spent a lot of time with (Bowman),” he told On3.com. “I spent a lot of time with all of them, to be honest. They were all there throughout the whole visit. I like the way they interact with each other. It’s a family. They build bonds on and off the court.”

Auburn needs a wing and he will fill the need.

“Their message to me was I have an opportunity to come here and be great as long as I do what I got to do and take care of business,” he said. “I’m definitely considering. I’m trying to have an opportunity to be the best player ever.”

Auburn previously landed former FIU guard Denver Jones and Chaney Johnson, a 6-foot-7 wing out of University of Alabama-Huntsville.
