SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — Heading into the 2015-16 season, it is imperative that sophomores Isaiah Whitehead and Khadeen Carrington stay healthy for Seton Hall.

Following a solid freshman year, the two will anchor the Pirates’ backcourt together after The Hall saw Sterling Gibbs transfer to UConn last spring.

What is an unknown for sixth-year head coach Kevin Willard’s team, though, is what the Pirates will do at the small forward position. Depth may not be strong at point guard and shooting guard, but Seton Hall has acquired new options and made some adjustments that have made for some deep competition as the preseason has rolled along.

At the moment, sophomore Desi Rodriguez and freshman Veer Singh have been the strongest at the wing slot. One thing that Willard sees as a way to create an advantage is the length of the 6-foot-6 Rodriguez and the 6-8 Singh.

Vance Jackson, a 6-foot-8 combo forward from Prolific Prep (CA), committed to UConn on Friday.

Jackson also considered Cal, among others.

“I love the whole school, the facilities, the coaching staff and the team,” Jackson told SNY.tv after his recent visit to UConn.

Jackson is especially close with UConn sophomore guard Daniel Hamilton, with whom he played at St. John Bosco.

“We are like brothers,” he said. “I’ve been playing with him since the eighth grade.”

The No. 10 small forward in the Class of 2016 according to 247Sports.com, Jackson figures to be a force in college.

At least half of the NBA has scouted St. Joe’s junior small forward Deandre’ Bembry, and head coach Phil Martelli believes he can ultimately be a first-round draft pick.

Bembry,  a Charlotte, N.C., native who played high school ball at St. Patrick in Elizabeth, N.J., averaged 17.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists last year at St. Joe’s.  He was just named to the Julius Erving watch list, which seems appropriate since his afro is reminiscent of Dr. J’s.

Bembry is currently projected as the No. 38 pick in 2016 by DraftExpress.com.

“That number is not going to stay the same,” Martelli said Thursday on The 4 Quarters Podcast. “He’s not going to be the 38th player taken in the draft. Whether it’s this year or next year, he’s going to be much higher than that.”

gilesOne week after their second annual NBA Pro Day, Kentucky will host three players projected in the Top 10 of the 2017 NBA Draft for their Big Blue Madness tonight (Friday).

Harry Giles (No. 1), De’Aaron Fox (No. 6) and Malik Monk (No. 7) are projected to go early in 2017 by DraftExpress.com.

Kentucky will also host 2016 big man commit Sacha Killeya-Jones and is expected to host 2017 prospects Trae Young, Gary Trent Jr., Wendell Carter Jr. and Kris Wilkes. Wenyen Gabriel, another 2016 Kentucky commit, won’t make the trip.

Among the 2016 guys, the 6-foot-10 Giles is also considering Duke, North Carolina, Kansas and Wake Forest, with Duke considered the favorite. But until he commits, anything is possible.
