  • NEW YORK — At 31 years old, Serena Williams is the oldest woman ever to be ranked No. 1 in the world.

And while that achievement is important, perhaps of more significance is that Williams is closing in on a couple of tennis legends on the all-time Majors list.

Williams owns 15 career Major singles titles and remains three behind Hall of Famers Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, who won 18 apiece.

“It’s very close but it’s extremely far away,” Williams said before beating world No. 2  Victoria Azarenka, 6-4, 6-3, Monday night in the BNP Paribas Showdown at Madison Square Garden.

NEW YORK —  After a week off, Bishop Loughlin took the floor against Iona Prep on Sunday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the C.H.S.A.A. Intersectional Basketball Championship at Fordham University and started out of the gate slowly.

But it did not take long for Loughlin to hit their stride behind the play of junior guards Khadeen Carrington and Michael Williams. Williams finished with 23 points and Carrington added 21 to lead Loughlin over Iona Prep, 72-59.

    NEW YORK
    — The enduring image of the Knicks’ 99-93 loss to the Miami Heat Sunday afternoon was LeBron James stealing a J.R. Smith pass on the perimeter in the game’s final seconds and gliding downcourt for an uncontested dunk.

In the end, it was James, the presumptive NBA MVP, overcoming a third-quarter knee injury and putting up 29 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists to will his team to its 14th straight victory before a capacity crowd at Madison Square Garden.

It wasn’t the Knicks making a statement by moving to 3-0 against Miami this season, and throwing some intrigue into the Eastern Conference playoff situation.
