  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. — It’s been quite a week for Herb Pope.

In the span of of nine days, the Seton Hall forward bruised his ribs, sat out a game against UConn, appeared to head butt Eli Carter down the stretch of a hotly contested rivalry game and then hit a huge 3-pointer in the Pirates’ 59-54 victory at the Rutgers Athletic Center that came in front of Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz.

“They’re a great team, it’s just that we needed that win,” Pope said after going for 12 points and 12 rebounds to help snap a six-game losing streak for Seton Hall (16-8, 5-7 Big East).

With 3:26 left in the game and Seton Hall ahead 48-44, the video replay showed Pope appearing to head butt Carter and Carter then pushing back.

“He definitely did, but it’s no hard feelings,” Carter (13 points) said when asked if Pope head-butted him.

Amar’e Stoudemire will return to the Knicks Monday, head coach Mike D’Antoni announced Wednesday.

Stoudemire remains in Florida grieving the loss of his older brother, Hazell, who was killed this past Monday in a car crash.

Stoudemire will miss Friday’s home game against the Lakers and Saturday’s game in Minnesota, but would be available for Tuesday’s tilt at Toronto.

Carmelo Anthony remains out 1-2 weeks with a right groin strain.

Knicks guard Landry Fields was selected to the Rising Stars Challenge over All-Star Weekend, but Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni can’t believe that rookie Iman Shumpert was not.

“I was shocked [Shumpert] didn’t make it,’’ D’Antoni told reporters before the Knicks’ 107-93 victory over the Wizards. “Not taking anything away from other guys.”

According to the New York Post, D’Antoni was informed that assistant coaches did the voting.

“Could be a reason why they’re assistants,” D’Antoni said. “Because he plays as well as anybody. Iman deserved to be on it. It’s too bad.”

Just a couple of hours before St. John’s is set to host Cincinnati, the school announced that junior guard Malik Stith had withdrawn from the team for personal reasons.

The Johnnies are back to seven scholarship players, five of whom are freshmen.

Stith will remain a part of the St. John’s program as a student and will continue to make progress toward earning his degree in sport management.

“For personal reasons Malik has chosen to no longer participate as a member of our basketball team,” head coach Steve Lavin said.
