Saquan Singleton, the 6-foot-6, 190-pound playmaking guard from The Bronx, committed to New Mexico on Monday, he told ZAGSBLOG.

Singleton, who attended Monsignor Scanlan High School in The Bronx and spent the last two years at Hutchinson (KS) Community College, chose New Mexico from a final five that included Alabama, Kansas State, Pacific and TCU.

“I will be taking my talents to The Pit, New Mexico Lobos,” he said by phone. “I can’t wait to get there and start working.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Singleton has been unable to visit campus but took a virtual tour online and did research with his family.

“Just the love from the coaches, from Paul [Weir], from coach Dan [McHale], the rest of the staff,” he said of his reasoning for choosing New Mexico. “Unfortunately, I couldn’t get to see the visit [because of coronavirus] but I just felt the love and the connection. I love the way they play and how they let their guards play. It was a tough decision between Nex Mexico and Alabama. I think this is a good one right here.”

Singleton averaged 11.8 points, 7.3 rebound and 4.8 assists in 32 games last season, while shooting 54 percent from the field.

“I’m just bringing everything, my work ethic on the court, just making plays, making my teammates better, just trying to be the leader, that piece that they need,” he said.

Singleton feels two years in junior college will help him in the D-1 ranks.

“Junior college is no joke, it’s tough,” he said. “It’s not D-1 but it’s going to prepare you for D-1. It prepared me mentally and physically so I think I’m going to bring a lot of aggression, a lot of work, just be that piece that Paul Weir says he needs.”

He joins a recruiting class that includes former Mississippi State signee Bayron Matos-Garcia, a 6-8 center, 6-6 guard Nolan Dorsey from North Carolina, 6-6 small forward Javonte Johnson out of Colorado and 7-foot center Assane N’Diaye out of Kilgore (TX) College. They also have top-70 small forward JB White committed in 2021.
