Vance Jackson, the 6-foot-8 UConn transfer, has signed with New Mexico per Evan Daniels of Scout. He will sit out the 2017-18 season then have three years of eligibility remaining.

“I love the staff and feel like Coach Weir and I have a great connection,” Jackson told ESPN. “He’s a young coach and I feel like I can talk to him.”

Last season at UConn, Jackson averaged 8.1 points and 3.8 rebounds as a freshman. He took visits to TCU, Washington, San Diego State and Rutgers before committing to New Mexico.

“I had conversations with the coach, I was just wondering if there was a way we could utilize him more to help the team. His skill level, there’s a lot of stuff he can do, and we weren’t on the same page with it,” Vance Jackson Sr. told ZAGSBLOG following Jackson’s release from UConn. “A lot of people think it’s me, me, Vance is telling me what he wants to do and I was just trying to [explain] it to the coach. We know what he’s capable of. You got a smaller person on him, you can post him up. You got a bigger person on him, you can take him off the dribble. We want to be able to utilize the skill level to help us win. That’s it.”

Jackson is the first commit in New Mexico’s 2018 class. The Lobos have the No. 122 ranked recruiting class in 2017.

“I want to help get New Mexico back to what it was,” Jackson told ESPN.
