  • John CalipariJohn Calipari made an off-handed joke Friday about potential one-and-done changes to college basketball.

“They’re talking about it going to two, and I’ve called to see if we could have that immediately,” the Kentucky coach said according to Brett Dawson of Rivals.com.

New NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is in favor of changing the one-and-done rule to two-and-done, but it likely couldn’t happen before at least 2017, when there is an opt-out for either side in the new collective bargaining agreement.

The NBA rule would have to be collectively bargained and there’s no reason to think the Player’s Association would give in on such a change.

“The owners are going to have to give the players something before the players agree to the two-year deal,” one former NBA executive told SNY.tv.

ObekpaSt. John’s could get one big man back just in time for their biggest game of the season, but will be without another.

Sophomore center Chris Obekpa could play in Saturday’s game against No. 9 Villanova — a game with huge NCAA Tournament implications for the Johnnies — while senior big man Orlando Sanchez is out because his wife, Flor Esthefani, had a baby daughter, the school announced.

“Our St. John’s basketball family congratulates Orlando and Flor on bringing newborn baby girl Ysabel Angela Sanchez into the world,” coach Steve Lavin said.

Lavin also said he wouldn’t “rule out” Obekpa playing, but he is by no means a certainty to play.

“He looked fine, he’s not limping or anything,” St. John’s junior JaKarr Sampson said Friday, according to the New York Post. “He looked like he’s ready to play tomorrow.”

UNION, N.J. — Cincinnati commit Quadri Moore is trying to win a New Jersey Tournament of Champions title while also keeping en eye on his future college club.

The 6-foot-8 Moore — who could be New Jersey’s most complete player this season — is committed to play for head coach Mick Cronin and his No. 7-ranked Bearcats next season and spent a little time discussing their season.

Cincinnati currently has a record of 24-3 with an impressive American Athletic Conference record of 13-1. They have three important wins over Louisville (away), Memphis (away) and Connecticut (home) and ironically, their next three games are against those three teams and will likely determine who gets the number one seed in the conference tournament.

Cincinnati has a huge home game Saturday against No. 11 Louisville (22-4, 11-2). The Bearcats currently lead the Cardinals by a game and a half for first place.

TyshawnFormer Brooklyn Nets and Kansas guard Tyshawn Taylor has signed with Atléticos de San Germán in Puerto Rico and will join the team in April, the team’s co-owner, Alberto Muniz, told SNY.tv. by phone.

Taylor is currently with the Maine Red Claws of the D-League, averaging 9.8 points and 3.3 rebounds, and will join Atléticos after the D-League season ends April 4. The Atléticos begin their season March 26.

“He will start playing immediately when he finishes the NBDL,” Muniz said. “He will be arriving to Puerto Rico and playing with Atléticos de San Germán, which is the most traditional team here in Puerto Rico.”

Taylor’s former St. Anthony High School teammate, Mike Rosario, as well as former St. Anthony forward Chris Gaston both play for Leones de Ponce in Puerto Rico.

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. — Since Point Beach point guard Matt Farrell decommitted from Boston College, his stellar play this season has piqued the interest of several high-major schools and he seems to be attracting new schools with each passing game.

In Thursday’s 62-42 win over Southern Regional, Farrell scored 17 points and dished out several assists to his teammates for easy buckets. His lightning-quick first-step and ability to attack the basket jump out at you when you watch his game, but what stood out Thursday was his decision-making and suffocating defense. He accounted for several steals in the halfcourt that led to fast-break buckets and helped blow the game open in the fourth quarter.

Myles Turner has cut his list down to Oklahoma State, Kansas, Texas, Ohio State, Duke, Arizona and Kentucky. But after a visit to SMU, he says that the Mustangs are still in the mix.

“They weren’t on my list last time, but they are somewhat back in the running now,” Turner told Mustangs Madness in an interview after the visit. “They are kind of like a dark horse so to say. I still have my official list, but SMU is still kind of in the mix.”
