  • Ja’Quan Newton pulled the trigger for Miami on Wednesday, ending his recruitment before taking his official visits.

“Yes,” the 6-foot-3 Newton confirmed to SNY.tv.

He previously told SNY.tv of Miami:

“I like them a lot. Pick and roll. I haven’t been out there but I like their style of play.”

Neumann-Goretti Assistant John Mosco feels that Newton will fit in well at Miami.

“He can make plays for them off of the pick and roll,” Mosco said. “You need multiple playmakers on the floor nowadays. He can get in the lanes and get guys open shots. He is a winner.”

Troy Holton has cut his list to two: South Florida and Miami.

The sweet shooting 6-foot-4 rising senior out of Oldsmar Christian School (Fla.) cut Marquette, Memphis, Alabama and Kansas State from his 6-school list before he took his visit to USF on Monday.

“I wanted to stay in state,” Holston told SNY.tv. “Why leave the state if I have those schools right here in my own back yard? Marquette, Kansas State, Memphis and Alabama are great schools, but it all came down to wanting to stay in the state.”

Jahlil Okafor, the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2014, has set his second official visit and it coincides with the annual Kentucky alumni game.

“My second official visit will be to Kentucky, on September 9th,” the 6-foot-10 Okafor Tweeted.

That weekend Kentucky hosts its alumni game, which is slated to include a matchup between members of the Class of 2010 (John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, etc.) and the Class of 2012 (Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, etc.).

As previously reported here, 2015 wing Derrick Jones will also visit that weekend, unofficially.
