If Dominic Cheek hears his name called at all during the June 28 NBA Draft, it will likely be from Adam Silver and not David Stern.
The 6-foot-6 Villanova junior wing may well go undrafted but is turning pro in order to help financially support his grandmother, Izaphine “Ice” Howard, who helped raised him from the age of 5 in the rugged city of Jersey City, N.J.
“She’s getting old now,” Cheek told SNY.tv Thursday during a phone interview. “She’s taking care of two of my brothers and I guess it’s just time for me to try to pay her back, try to help her out.
“Just try to help her out any possible way and just try to pursue my pro career.” (more…)

NEW ORLEANS — Villanova juniors Dominic Cheek and Maalik Wayns should not come out for the NBA Draft, one veteran NBA scout told SNY.tv.
“What’s going through his head?” the scout asked of Cheek, who sources confirmed to SNY.tv is considering coming out this year. “I mean, it’s crazy. What has he done that makes him think he can go into the draft?
“It doesn’t make any sense. He was higher-rated coming out of high school than he is now.” (more…)

Villanova coach Jay Wright declined to comment on Temple’s imminent addition to the Big East, but says his school supports anything that’s “good for the conference.”
“We’re in support of any expansion that’s good for the conference, that’s all I can say right now,” Wright said Thursday. “Whatever direction the Big East does go by, I’d be glad to comment after they make the move but I don’t want to comment about any schools until it’s a done deal.”
Villanova had long been opposed to Temple joining the conference because both schools share the Philadelphia market, but the Big East desperately needs an eighth football team in 2012 to replace departing West Virginia. (more…)

PHILADELPHIA – Duke may be the favorite to land Amile Jefferson, but Villanova coach Jay Wrightisn’t bowing out quietly.
Armed with just one scholarship for the Class of 2012, Wright is hanging in there down to the very end on Jefferson, a 6-foot-8 forward from Philly Friends Central.
The Villanova coach was in attendance again Wednesday night when Friends Central lost to Westtown, 55-53, in a Friends Schools League playoff semifinal at Germantown Friends.
“It definitely means a lot to me to see him take time out of his schedule,” Jefferson told FiveStarBasketball.com after putting up 26 points, 10 boards and two blocks in the loss. “They’re in the middle of the season right now, really in the height of it.”
