Boost Mobile: Raining, Game Moved

By Adam Zagoria on August 21, 2009, 8:22PM

NEW YORK — What a mess.

The Boost Mobile Elite 24 game was just moved because of rain from Rucker Park to the Gauchos Gym. I’m sitting here courtside and Rice coach Moe Hicks just told me he’s looking for a power cord.

“If I don’t get this cord, there ain’t gonna be no game,” he said.

ESPN is out so there will be no TV coverage on Saturday.

This game should’ve been moved to Fordham yesterday with the rain predictions.

A lot of people were left standing out front who couldn’t get into this smaller gym.

The dunk contest was cancelled earlier. Folks sat around and ate and watched the players warm up and then it rained again.

Rajon Rondo, Tyreke Evans and Tiny Morton are coaching the Skip team, while Pete Vecsey, Brandon Jennings and Kevin Love are coaching the Goat team.

Pete Vecsey says his starting lineup is Jared Sullinger, Tristan Thompson, Kyrie Irving, Josh Selby and CJ Leslie…

The starting lineup for Goat is Tobias Harris, Joe Jackson, Harrison Barnes, Josh Smith and Will Barotn.

Stay tuned…

Iraqi Journalist Throws Shoes at Bush

By Adam Zagoria on December 15, 2008, 11:14AM

I know this is a sports blog, but sometimes events in the real world are too juicy to pass up. Here’s video of an Iraqi journalist throwing his shoes at President George Bush.

“So what if the guy threw his shoe at me,” said Bush. “It is one way to gain attention. It’s like going to a political rally and having people yell at you. It’s like driving down the street and having people not gesturing with all five fingers.”

Oklahoma Jumps Texas in BCS Standings

By Adam Zagoria on November 30, 2008, 6:53PM

NEW YORK (AP) – Oklahoma was ahead of Texas in the BCS standings Sunday and headed to the Big 12 championship game with an inside track to the national title.

A three-way tie between Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech atop the Big 12 South standings forced the league to use its fifth tiebreaker, best BCS rating, to determine which team will play Missouri on Saturday in Kansas City, Mo.

The Sooners (11-1), who lost to Texas 45-35 in October, barely edged the Longhorns. Oklahoma has a .9351 BCS average. Texas’ BCS average is .9223. (more…)

Gonzalez to Dribble Through NYC Marathon

By Adam Zagoria on November 01, 2008, 5:46PM

One of the most interesting and compelling people I met during my 10 years at the Herald News was Gian Paul Gonzalez, a native of North Haledon, N.J. who was a Division III All-American at Montclair State.

Check out the story below I wrote on Gonzalez a few years back. In it, Gonzalez talks about how he discovered his mother’s doctor advised her to have an abortion when she was pregnant with him because she had German measles.

Anyway, given how much I know about Gonzalez and his faith, it didn’t surprise me too much to learn that he will undertake something truly remarkable on Sunday.

Gonzalez plans to dribble a basketball through the entire 26.2 miles of the New York City Marathon in order to raise awareness and money for Ball 4 Lives, an organization in partnership with Bethesda Outreach, which provides care and funds to orphans in South Africa whose parents have died of AIDS. To prepare for Sunday, Gonzalez recently dribbled from the George Washington Bridge to down town Jersey City. (more…)

Mike Singletary Asked About Bill Walsh

By Adam Zagoria on October 28, 2008, 8:07AM

Danyelle Sargent’s YouTube moment can no longer be embedded, but you can still view it here. And we highly recommend that you do.

Sargent asked San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary: “”I hear that your mentor Bill Walsh was one of the first phone calls you made when you found out you had the job. What does it mean to you to be the head coach of the 49ers?” (more…)

Ultimate Disappointment

By Adam Zagoria on October 13, 2008, 9:01AM

I had hoped to write a triumphant post today about how my Ultimate team, Above & Beyond from New York, had qualified yet again for Nationals in Sarasota, Fla. later this month.

Our team, a group of Masters players over 33, had qualified for the Ultimate Players Association (UPA) Nationals four years in a row, reaching the finals in 2005 and the semis in ’06. (Here are a few pictures from ’05, with me holding up the runner-up trophy along with my then-10-month old daughter, Grace.)

But this year we came up short at Regionals in Boston this past weekend. Very disappointing for all of us who worked so hard during the year to prepare for the fall series. (more…)

Jersey’s Moreno Runs Over Central Michigan

By Adam Zagoria on September 07, 2008, 10:16AM

Knowshon Moreno, a Belford, N.J. native and Heisman Trophy candidate, rushed for 168 yards and tied his career high with three touchdowns as No. 2 Georgia routed Central Michigan 56-17 on Saturday.

On one play in the third quarter, he hurdled a defender and ran for 29 yards.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before,” Georgia defensive tackle Corvey Irvin told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “He might not even be human. Wow, how’d he do that, all in one motion?”

Mark Richt, the Georgia coach, said Moreno had done that once before in practice.

Walter Payton might have done it one time,” Richt said.

“He’s a special kid,” the coach added. “We saw him do it in practice, and I redshirted him (last year) anyway. That wasn’t real smart on my part. I knew he was good, but I didn’t know he was that good.”

Rencher Added to St. Louis Staff

By Adam Zagoria on August 28, 2008, 11:27AM

Terrence Rencher, a former St. Raymond’s star and the all-time leading scorer in Texas history, has been named a graduate assistant under Rick Majerus at St. Louis.

A former New York STate Mr. Basketball in 1991, Rencher was drafted by the Miami Heat in 1995 and played in the NBA and overseas until 2006. Last year he served as the AD and boys basketball coach at the Regents school in Austin, Texas.

“I am both flattered and elated that Coach Majerus has given me such a great to work and learn from him at St. Louis University,” REncher said. “He is unquestionably one of the best coaches in college basketball today and I hope to live up to his expectations.”

This Just In: Newspapers Are Dying

By Adam Zagoria on August 20, 2008, 11:32AM

This news just in: newspapers are dying.

Every day seems to bring more news of layoffs in the business, sending more and more reporters running toward work on the Internet.

My advice: Get out while you can.

**The Daily News plans to buy out 25 members of its newsroom. The package will offer reporters two weeks of pay for every year served (reporters max out at 52 weeks of buyout pay) and six months of health care. (more…)
