Jerome Frink Close to Announcing

By Adam Zagoria on May 06, 2012, 10:32AM

St. Anthony senior power forward Jerome Frink could announce his college choice this week, his mother told SNY.tv.

Ingrid Frink said her son is considering “Hofstra, FIU, Iona, Quinnipiac and a couple other schools.”

“He’s still looking,” she told SNY.tv. “He should make his decision by this week.”

She added: “He still has two more visits. I’m not sure if he’s going to take them this week.” (more…)

Tariq Carey Headed to Quinnipiac

By Adam Zagoria on April 13, 2012, 3:03PM

NEW YORK — On the day before St. Anthony capped a perfect season by winning the New Jersey Tournament of Champions crown, a single college coach was in the school’s Jersey City gym.

That coach was Tom Moore of Quinnipiac.

Turns out Moore’s persistence paid off as his target, 6-foot-3 guard Tariq Carey, verbally pledged to the Northeast Conference school Friday in the SNY.tv studio.

“The atmosphere was great, it was just a family atmosphere,” Carey said. “I just liked a lot of aspects about the school.” (more…)

For Kansas, It’s Tyshawn Being Tyshawn

By Adam Zagoria on April 01, 2012, 12:37AM

NEW ORLEANS -- There’s Manny being Manny.

And now there’s Tyshawn being Tyshawn.

In the span of a few heart-stopping moments late Saturday night, Taylor gaveth and he tooketh away.

The Hoboken, N.J., native and former St. Anthony star hit two clutch foul shots with 8.3 seconds remaining to give Kansas a three-point lead after they had trailed by as many as 13 in the national semifinals against Ohio State.

And then, in the blink of an eye, he stole an inbounds pass from Lenzelle Smith and fired a crosscourt bounce pass to Elijah Johnson then ended up going to Kansas coach Bill Self instead. (more…)

Kansas’ Taylor Shooting for Rare High School, College Double National Championship

By Adam Zagoria on March 30, 2012, 2:33PM

NEW ORLEANS — Tyshawn Taylor, the kid from Hoboken, N.J. who’s had a rocky four years at Kansas, is two victories from a rare double high school/college national championship.

Taylor was a member of Bob Hurley’s undefeated 2007-8 St. Anthony team that produced six Division I-bound seniors and won the mythical national championship.

Now, he’s here in the Final Four as the leader of a Kansas team that faces Ohio State Saturday night in the national semifinals.

“I actually believe that Tyshawn would play at this level since we recruited him,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “He played on that great St. Anthony’s team that won the national championship and all five guys went to high-major schools. I thought Ty was the best prospect out of everybody.” (more…)

Ohio State Only Team Without a Jersey Player

By Adam Zagoria on March 26, 2012, 1:40PM

Ohio State is the only team in this Final Four without a player from New Jersey’s powerhouse St. Basketball trio of St. Anthony, St. Patrick and St. Benedict’s.

But that’s apparently not for lack of trying.

“Well, we have recruited that area and you can see our success rate since we’re the only one that doesn’t have one,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said Monday on a conference call.

St. Anthony product Tyshawn Taylor runs the point for Kansas, St. Patrick alum Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is a major contributor at (more…)

St. Anthony Finishes Unbeaten But Without A Mythical National Title

By Adam Zagoria on March 21, 2012, 11:10AM

Bob Hurley has coached at St. Anthony for 40 years and won 27 State titles and 12 New Jersey Tournament of Champions crowns.

After Tuesday night’s 66-62 victory over Plainfield in the TOC final, Hurley has now led seven teams to undefeated seasons, according to Jim Hague, St. Anthony historian and journalist at the Hudson Reporter.

In four of the previous six unbeaten seasons, the Friars won a USA Today mythical national championship.

But this year, for the third time, St. Anthony won’t win the mythical national title.

That’s because Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., completed its season 44-0 and is ranked No. 1 in both the USA Today and ESPN polls. Findlay Prep (29-1) is currently No. 2 in both rankings and St. Anthony is No. 3 in both.

“I hate to blow your bubble on this one but I really don’t care,” Hurley told SNY.tv in a recent interview. “All I’m interested in is The Star-Ledger poll in New Jersey given out to the No. 1 team in the state at the end of the year. If you do really well in the Ledger poll then you’ve had a really good year. (more…)

Anderson, St. Anthony Win Tournament of Champions, Complete Back-to-Back Perfect Seasons

By Adam Zagoria on March 20, 2012, 11:13PM

By JOSH NEWMAN

Special to ZAGSBLOG

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. –  When you look at Kyle Anderson, the stats are pretty outrageous, but none crazier than this.

The 6-foot-9 UCLA signee has lost just once in the last three seasons at the highest level of high school basketball in New Jersey. That came in the 2010 Non-Public North B final against St. Anthony when Anderson was still at Paterson Catholic before the former North Jersey basketball powerhouse shut down after that school year.

That March night at Rutgers was the last defeat he would taste and as Bob Hurley joked in the media room at the IZOD Center on Tuesday evening after St. Anthony’s latest Tournament of Champions win, Anderson couldn’t beat them, so he joined them.  (more…)

St. Anthony’s ‘Core Four’ Shoots to Go 65-0

By Adam Zagoria on March 20, 2012, 6:10AM

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — In addition to being a Hall of Fame basketball coach, Bob Hurley is also a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees.

And so perhaps it comes as no surprise that as his team enters the final game of its season — the final game on the New Jersey high school basketball calendar — he was drawing a comparison between his quartet of key players and the Yankees “Core Four.”

“The Yankee core of Mariano and Jeter and Posada and Pettitte was the ‘Core Four’ for a very long time and our ‘Core Four’ during the course of the season has been Kyle [Anderson] and Jerome [Frink] and Josh Brown and Hallice [Cooke],” Hurley told SNY.tv following St. Anthony practice Monday. St. Anthony Is Unbeaten Despite Losing Seven Players

By Adam Zagoria on March 15, 2012, 12:17PM

LOUISVILLE,  Ky. — The most amazing thing about St. Anthony’s 30-0 season is the one that has gone largely unnoticed.

Seven players who were on Bob Hurley’s roster at the beginning of the season are no longer with the team.

“Six have left, one’s been injured,” Hurley told SNY.tv Thursday, one day before the Friars will face Atlantic City (26-5) in the New Jersey Tournament of Champions semifinals at Rutgers.

“We have had some re-shaping of the roster.”

Always the taskmaster, Hurley dismissed six players from the roster during a year when his team has amassed a 63-game winning streak dating to last season’s 33-0 campaign that culminated in a mythical national championship. (more…)

Hudson Catholic Looking to Take Title From St. Anthony

By Adam Zagoria on March 08, 2012, 7:15AM

When Paterson Catholic High School closed in 2010, its loaded basketball team split asunder and its talented players drifted in different directions.

PC’s two best players — Kyle Anderson and Myles Mack — shifted to St. Anthony to play for Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley.

So far, that has worked out fairly well for the Friars (28-0), who won a mythical national championship last season and take a 61-game winning streak into Thursday’s North Non-Public B championship game against Hudson Catholic (25-2) at Rutgers. (more…)
