By Adam Zagoria on November 01, 2010, 9:14PM

After taking weekend official visits, New Jersey products Elijah Carter and Desmond Hubert are still weighing their options as they move closer to decisions.

The 6-foot-2 Carter, a Willingboro, N.J., native, visited Oregon State this past weekend and watched the football team pound Cal, 35-7, on Homecoming Weekend.

“I had a great time,” Carter said by text. “I really enjoyed the college life out there.” (more…)

6-11 Malcolm Gilbert A Defensive Force

By Adam Zagoria on June 14, 2010, 11:20PM

NEW YORK — Malcolm Gilbert didn’t score a single point during Sunday’s 17-and-under Gold championship game at the Rumble in the Bronx at Fordham University.

But at 6 feet, 11 inches tall, Gilbert was a major factor in helping East Coast Elite down Andre Drummond and the Connecticut Basketball Club, 63-58, for the title.

Gilbert had five blocks on Drummond, the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2012, in the first half and six total blocks in the game. He also finished with 9 rebounds — 6 offensive, 3 defensive — before fouling out with 54 seconds remaining.

“He’s intriguing because of his upside,” East Coach Elite coach Terrell Myers said before the final. “What people don’t understand is, they see 6-11, they look at him as an offensive player. He’s not an offensive player, he’s a defensive player. (more…)

Gritty Performance Earns Arcidiacono Praise

By Adam Zagoria on June 03, 2010, 11:55AM

Ryan Arcidiacono drove to the hoop for a reverse layup last Friday night at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in North Carolina when an opposing player undercut him and sent him flying to the floor.

“The kid shoved me and took my legs out and my face hit the ground pretty hard,” recalled Arcidiacono, a 16-year-old rising junior at Neshaminy (Pa.) High School. “It just hurt. It felt like I had a golf ball in my face. I had blood on my hands. It was just gushing blood.”

It was after midnight when Gene Rice, Arcidiacono’s AAU coach with the PA Playaz, took his 6-foot-4, 190-pound point guard to the Wake Forest University Medical Center where he took eight stitches in the forehead.

“The doctor said if it was his kid he wouldn’t let me play [the next day],” Arcidiacono said. (more…)

By Adam Zagoria on February 03, 2010, 2:41PM

The 2010 Rutgers recruiting class is like a bottle of fine wine.

It gets better with time.

The Scarlet Knights over the last two days landed two four-star recruits and two three-star prospects to a class that currently stands at 24 players heading into Wednesday’s National Signing Day.

With the additions of 6-foot-6 four-star wide receiver Brandon Coleman of Forestville, Md., and 5-10 four-star safety Rashad Knight of Jacksonville, Fla., the Knights are headed strong to the finish line.

Reebok Camp Notebook – Part 1: Jayon James Transferring; Garland to Virginia Tech

By Adam Zagoria on July 09, 2009, 3:52PM

PHILLY – Drove down here this morning and I’ve already eaten a Philly cheese steak at the Pour House with Dana O’Neill of ESPN.com and Brendan Quinn of Basketball Times. Quinn did the driving and did a spectacular job parallel parking in front of the restaurant, a la George Costanza in the hospital episode of “Seinfeld.”

Here are some quick notes.

***UPDATE***

**Chris Coleman, a 6-9 junior center from Durham (NC) Mt. Zion (pictured), has committed to Florida International and head coach Isiah Thomas, despite my previous post to the contrary.

“I liked that [Thomas] played in the NBA, coached in the NBA and he’s got a lot of experience and stuff,” Coleman told the NBE Basketball Report. “That is where I am trying to get, so that is why I committed.” (more…)

N’Diaye’s Dunk Makes Statement; Recruiting Notes

By Adam Zagoria on December 10, 2008, 8:53PM

PRINCETON, N.J. — Hamady N’Diaye leaped high above the rim and dunked home a Mike Coburn miss to give Rutgers a three point lead with 10.6 seconds left against Princeton at Jadwin Gym.

N’Diaye’s athletic play and two foul shots in the final seconds by JR Inman helped insure a 49-44 victory by the Scarlet Knights instead of another ignominious loss in its non-conference schedule.

“The dunk to me was just the play that I had to make for my team,” said N’Diaye, a 6-foot-11 junior center originally from Senegal. “I saw the opportunity and I just took it because we needed some points. It was a close game.”
